Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Advances to MAAC Championship Game

The Canisius softball team advanced to the MAAC Softball Championship for the second consecutive season after they defeated Iona, 4-2, in the elimination bracket. Earlier in the day, the Golden Griffins lost to Marist, 6-5, in their first game of the afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Game One Recap
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, sophomore Saige Alfaro would safely reach base off single up the middle to get the home side on base. In the Griffs very next at-back, Christie McGee-Ross would send a ball over the wall in right center field to tie the game 2-all.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Red Foxes would reclaim the lead off a Hannah Brock home run to make it 3-2 before Haley Ahr added an RBI single to extend the lead by one, 4-2.

McGee-Ross would get a run back for the Griffs in the bottom of the fifth and cut the defecit to just one, 4-3, off an RBI single. Gianna Fazzolari would foul out to first, but her out would not be in vain as she scored McGee-Ross to tie the game, 4-all. In the Griffs very next at bat, Rosie Gomez would notch her first RBI of the day to put the Griffs ahead, 5-4.

Still, Marist would get two runs in the top of the seventh to put the Red Foxes ahead, 6-5, and punch their ticket to the championship game.

Game Two Recap
Canisius would stike first against Iona, with the elder Alfaro trotting into home after an error from Gaels catcher Jaime Sheeran.

The Griffs offense continued to push in the bottom of the second inning, notching two more runs off RBI from Sophia Recrosio and McGee-Ross to extend their advantage to 3-0.

Not only cooking on the mound, junior Megan Giese would record an RBI in the bottom half of the third inning, bringing in Fazzolari to make it a 4-0 lead.

Giese made history on the mound in the fourth, notching her 200th strikeout of the season. Giese joined Andrea Bunten as the only two pitchers in program history to reach the milestone.

Iona would tack on two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Griffs would shut down the Gales the rest of the way, limiting them to one hit to book their trip back to the MAAC Championship game.
