Women's Lacrosse Storms Back to Defeat Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day

Canisius scored the final six goals of the game to erase a five-goal deficit and defeat Mount St. Mary's, 11-10, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday morning at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Golden Griffins moved the 7-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Mount, meanwhile, slipped to 3-10 on the season and 2-3 in MAAC action.

Canisius was paced by graduate  midfielder Skylar McArthur, who netted her eighth hat trick of the season. Paige Stachura, Ivy Santana and Riley Davis each added in two goals apiece with Stachura also notching an assist. On the defensive side of the ball, junior defender Meghan Ellis picked up four ground balls while Stachura caused a game-high four turnovers. In net, freshman Delaney Hayden picked up her first career win, making six saves over the final 33:28 of action after replacing starter Jody Chu between the pipes in the second quarter.

The Mount was led by Julianna Sanchez and Erin Anderson who each secured a hat trick. For Andrerson, she added in two assists to pair with her three goals to finish the game with five points. Madison Bradley picked up five ground balls while Sanchez secured nine draw controls. In the cage, Madison Bradley made nine saves.

The Mount held a 10-5 lead with 9:14 remaining in the third quarter before the Griffs offense would come alive, scoring the final four goals of the frame to make it a one-goal game entering the final frame.

The score remained the same until Davis found the back of the net with 7:41 to play in the fourth to tie the game for the first time since the opening whistle, 10-all.

The two MAAC foes would remained tied until the final minute of regulation, when McArthur found an open pocket of space and fired the ball past Bradley to give Canisius its first lead of the game, 11-10, with 20 seconds left on the clock.

A late game foul with four seconds to play gave Dani Donoghue one last attempt to tie the game for the Mount, but the Canisius defense and Hayden would step up to stymie the free-position attempt and seal the comeback victory.

Earlier in the contest, the Mountaineers would blank the Blue and Gold in the first quarter as they raced out to a 4-0 lead. In the second, Canisius would score a trio of goals, with Stachura, Davis and Kaitlyn Salce each finding the back of the net, to bring the score to within two, 5-3. The Mountaineers would tally a pair of goals, sandwiched around a tally for Santana, to take a 7-4 lead into the locker room, setting the stage for the Griffs' second-half comeback.
