Men’s Lacrosse Trio Recognized with MAAC Accolades

Highlighted by All-MAAC First Team selection Colin Kelly, a total of three members of the Canisius men's lacrosse team were recognized as the MAAC announced its regular-season awards on Friday.

Freshmen Kevin Carney and Micah Hanson were also honored as both were named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team.

Kelly garnered All-MAAC recognition for the second consecutive season after pacing the Golden Griffins in both goals (41) and points (45) during the regular season. Just the fifth player in program history to record 40 or more goals in a campaign, Kelly led the MAAC in goals per game (2.73) and ranked eighth on the circuit in points per contest (3.07). A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Kelly recorded multiple goals on 13 occasions during the 2023 campaign, highlighted by a seven-goal outburst in an 18-16 victory against Marist on March 18.

Carney was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team following a freshman season that saw him amass 24 points on 16 goals and eight assists in 12 games played. A two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week honoree, Carney finished with multiple points on seven occasions, including each of his final five games played. The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, N.Y., product also ranked eighth in the league in shooting percentage (.333) during the regular season.

Hanson earned all-rookie distinction after a debut campaign that saw him establish a program record with 194 face-off wins. The Black Earth, Wis., product also finished the 2023 campaign second on the program's single-season chart for ground balls with 131. Hanson, who led the MAAC in ground balls per game during the regular season (8.60), scooped up double-digit ground balls in six contests. He also recorded 10 or more wins at the face-off X on 13 occasions.

The MAAC also announced its all-academic team on Friday with Canisius landing 15 student-athletes on the list. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
