Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

McArthur's Milestone Spoiled by Fairfield

Graduate midfielder Skylar McArthur became the first Canisius player since Jen Reninger to eclipse the 100-goal plateau for her career, but a second-half surge by Fairfield would spoil the milestone in the Stags' 10-8 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex

With the win, Fairfield moves to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play while Canisius closes the regular season at 8-7 and 3-5 in MAAC action. The victory also secured the Stags the MAAC regular-season title and the top seed in the 2023 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship.

Elizabeth Talluto paced the Stags with five goals while her teammate, Libby Rowe, notched her own hat trick. Maggie Fort and Caroline Managan each picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. In net, Casey Collins made four saves to secure the win.

McArthur led the way once again for the Golden Griffins with four goals while junior midfielder Caroline Netti finished with a hat trick of her own. Graduate midfielder Kaitlyn Salce won a team-high three draw controls while junior defender Jill Galanti and sophomore midfielder Hailey Rooney each collected two ground balls. Freshman goalie Jody Chu made 12 saves in the losing effort.

Tied 1-1 midway through the first quarter, McArthur was able to slide past her defender and find the back of the net for her 100th career goal and put the Griffs ahead, 2-1.

The score would remain the same until the 10:51 mark of the second quarter when Talluto tallied her second of the afternoon to knot the game at 2-all. The Griffs offense would respond with McArthur and Netti each tallying their second of the afternoon to not only break the deadlock, but double the Blue and Gold's advantage and make it a 4-2 ballgame.

The Stags would close the half with back-to-back goals of their own, courtesy of Talluto's third and Rowe's first, to tie the game at 4-4 after 30 minutes.

Out of the intermission, Netti completed her hat trick and gave the Griffs their only lead of the second half, 5-4. Fairfield would take over from there, scoring four straight goals to close the quarter and take an 8-5 lead ahead of the final frame.

Rooney would get the Griffs on the board to start the fourth, but a goal from Rowe would nix the earlier tally and keep the away side ahead, 9-6, with 8:15 left.

McArthur would muster one final push for Canisius, scoring a pair of goals with under five minutes to play, but Talluto's fifth goal of the afternoon with 1:53 left would seal the Griffs fate and give Fairfield the 10-8 victory.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"We played a really hard-fought game against a strong Fairfield team and I'm proud of our kids. Unfortunately, we now have to see the results of a few other games before we know where we stand in the playoff picture, but we will be ready for the next game if we get in.

"Skylar is one of the most determined athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. She is so deserving of all of the praise she gets."

Game Notes:

• McArthur recorded her ninth hat trick this season in the loss.
• Fairfield did not convert on any free-position shots while Canisius scored on two free-position opportunities. McArthur scored both free-position goals for the Griffs as well.
• Rooney scored her first goal since March 19 against Youngstown State. She also set a new career-high in ground balls with two
• Chu finished with double-digit totals in saves for the fourth time this season. She concluded today's contest with 12 stops.
