Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Ends Season with Loss at Quinnipiac

Fourth-seeded Quinnipiac jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it defeated fifth-seeded Canisius, 10-4, in the opening round of the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday at the Quinnipiac Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium in Hamden, Conn.

The Bobcats (10-7) advance to the semifinal round, where they face the top-seeded Fairfield Stags on Thursday. The Golden Griffins (8-8) conclude the 2023 campaign with Sunday's setback.

Emily Feeny led the way for Quinnipiac with three goals and four points while her teammate, Abby Wise, collected three points of her own off two goals and an assist. Wise, along with Maddie Deegan and Kat Henselder, picked up three ground balls apiece while Henselder also recorded nine saves in the cage.

Graduate midfielder Skylar McArthur paced the Canisius offense with two goals while Caroline Netti and Paige Stachura accounted for the other two Griffs goals. Stachura and fellow All-MAAC First Team selection Jill Galanti each picked up three ground balls while senior defender Emme Foote caused a career-high three turnovers. In net, freshman Jody Chu made nine saves.

The Bobcats struck early, with Desiree Kleberg finding the back of the net less than one minute into the contest, igniting the home side's five-goal spurt to open the game. McArthur would notch her first goal of the contest at the 1:23 mark of the first quarter to get the Griffs on the board and make it a 5-1 contest.

Similar to the first quarter, the Bobcats would again strike in the opening minute of the second frame, with Feeny finding the twine. The Griffs defense would take over, keeping Quinnipiac scoreless for the remainder of the frame while Netti and McArthur each converted free-position shots to cut the deficit to three, 6-3, after 30 minutes.

The two sides kept each other scoreless during the third quarter, with Canisius causing three turnovers and picking up six ground balls and Quinnipiac causing five turnovers and notching seven ground balls in the frame.

Stachura would break the second-half scoreless drought at the 11:02 mark of the fourth, firing a ball past Henselder to bring the Griffs to withing two, 6-4. From there, the Bobcats would keep Canisius scoreless while adding four more tallies of their own to secure the win and advance to the semifinals.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"From the start we played a very uncharacteristic game and it resulted in us not getting the result we wanted. Our seniors and 5th years should be proud of how they've help bring our program back to consistently making the postseason.

"Our kids are so much more than just great lacrosse players and our coaching staff will support them through the rest of the school year as we look to finish strong academically and build a plan to win the MAAC next year."

Game Notes:

• Stachura finished the season with 99 goals for her career.
• The Griffs registered a season-high 12 caused turnovers in the loss, with seven different players at least causing one.
• McArthur finished as the Griffs leading scorer for the seventh time this season.
• Galanti matched her career-high in caused turnovers with two, a feat she last accomplished on April 13, 2021 at Niagara.
• Canisius was only 15-of-24 on clears while Quinnipiac was a perfect 20-of-20.
