Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores a Sweep at Saint Peter’s

The Canisius softball team used the long-ball in game one, and then played small-ball in game two en route to a sweep of Saint Peter's in MAAC softball action Saturday afternoon at Jaroshack Field in Jersey City, N.J.

Three different Golden Griffins had a two-run homer in the first game, and junior pitcher Megan Giese picked up her team-leading 11th win of the season, as the Griffs won game one by the score of 10-2 in five innings. In the night cap, Canisius posted seven RBI-singles in a 9-6 win over the Peacocks.

Canisius, which has now won six straight, improved to 21-13-1 overall and 10-2 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's fell to 22-15 overall and 1-7 in league action with the pair of losses.

Game One Recap
Leading 2-1 in the third, Giese helped her own cause with a two-run homer to left that also drove in freshman pinch-runner Gabi Farris. After the Peacocks made the score 4-2 in the home-half of the third, junior Christie McGee-Ross put the Griffs up 6-2 with a two-run shot in the fourth. Canisius tacked on four more runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead, pushing the Blue and Gold to their first mercy-rule win since April 2 at Marist. Two of those four runs came on the power of a two-run bomb by freshman Rylee Alfaro, her first collegiate home run.

Giese went the distance and threw 93 pitches in route to her 11th win of the season, which ties her for the second most pitching wins in the conference. She allowed two runs on four hits while walking four and fanning nine. At the plate, Giese went 2-for-3 with the two-run home run, a run scored and two batted in.

Giese was one of four Canisius players with multiple hits on the day, as the team posted 12 hits on three different Saint Peter's pitchers in the victory. Sophomore Saige Alfaro went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, a run scored and two RBI, while junior catcher Gianna Fazzolari went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Rylee Alfaro ended up going 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

Game Two Recap
Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, Canisius used four RBI-singles in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead in the nightcap of the MAAC doubleheader. A sac-fly by Saint Peter's sophomore Jess Forte in the fourth tied the game at 4-4, but Canisius regained the lead for good thanks to a five-run sixth inning that featured four hits that drove in runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Fazzolari, which made the score 8-4 in favor of the visiting team. Rylee Alfaro followed Fazzolari's RBI-double with a base knock of her own, which allowed pinch-runner Emily Ilano to score from second.

Saint Peter's added a pair of runs in the home-half of the seventh thanks to a two-run home run by senior Courtney Fraher, but Canisius pitcher Alexis Churchill got the Peacocks to ground into a double-play and then she induced another ground out to seal the victory, her sixth win of the season in the circle. Churchill ended the day by giving up six runs, five earned, while scattering seven hits and striking out three in seven innings of work.
