Softball Runs Win Streak to Eight with Sweep of Manhattan

The Canisius softball team stretched its win streak to eight straight, as the Golden Griffins went on the road and swept Manhattan in a MAAC doubleheader at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y., Sunday afternoon.

Canisius took the first game by the score of 3-0 before posting a 5-3 win in the nightcap. The Griffs, who are undefeated in their 11 games dating back to April 8, improved to 23-13-1 overall and 12-2 in MAAC action with the victories. Manhattan, which has now dropped 10-straight, fell to 6-33 overall and 2-10 in league play with the losses.

Game One Recap
The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the fifth and then tacked on two insurance runs thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of Nicole Rivait in the seventh en route to a 3-0 win in the first game of the day. Those three runs were more than enough for junior pitcher Megan Giese, who earned her 12th win of the season in the circle after she went the distance and allowed just four hits while fanning 10.

Canisius took the 1-0 lead in the fifth thanks in large part to freshman Gabi Farris. Farris led off the frame with an infield-single on a bunt, and then stole second base. She moved to third base on a sac-bunt by sophomore Saige Alfaro, and then scored moments later on a bunt base hit by junior Christie McGee-Ross. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the road team until the top-half of the seventh, when Rivait took a 2-1 offering over the fence in centerfield, driving in McGee-Ross, to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0.

Manhattan tried to rally in the seventh, and got the leadoff batter on via a walk, by Giese locked in and struck out the next two batters she faced before getting a fly-ball out in right to seal the victory. The win for Giese was her sixth over a MAAC opponent in seven starts this season.

McGree-Ross ended the first game as the only Griff with multiple hits off losing hurler Sophia Kiseloski, who fell to 2-13 on the year after she allowed three runs on seven hits.

Game Two Recap
The Griffs jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, as the Blue and Gold earned the sweep of the Jaspers with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. Sophomore Rosie Gomez put Canisius up 2-0 with a two-run homer in the first, her team-leading sixth long-ball this season, and then Canisius extended its lead to 3-0 in the third after an RBI-ground out by Gomez that pushed McGee-Ross the plate.

Canisius added an unearned run in fifth to take a 4-0 lead, and then Gianna Fazzolari drove in the Griffs' fifth run of the game with a sac-fly to right that allowed Destiny Falquez to score from third.

Canisius starter Toria Kover earned the win in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she tossed five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and fanning three. The Griffs had just three hits off a pair of Manhattan pitchers in the win, and two of those, including a double by Sydney Costan were extra-base hits. But Canisius took advantage of seven walks, and McGee-Ross ended the second game with a pair of stolen bases.
