Women's Lacrosse Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive with Win over Marist

Graduate midfielder Skylar McArthur stymied Marist's late-game surge with her second goal of the contest to ensure Canisius' 10-9 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Golden Griffins move to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in MAAC action while Red Foxes fall to 4-11 and 2-5 in conference play. The win also keeps Canisius in contention for a spot in the six-team MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship as it will head into the final day of the regular season in a tie for fifth place with Mount St. Mary's.

Graduate attacker Ivy Santana paced the Griffs with her third hat trick of the season while McArthur, junior Avery Penoyer and freshman Maggie Tifft all added two goals apiece. McArthur and fellow graduate student Kaitlyn Salce would each win four draw controls while in net, freshman Jody Chu made six saves and notched two ground balls.

Kerri Gutenberger paced Red Foxes' offense with four goals while Kelly Trotta notched a hat trick of her own. Delaney Hayes picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers for Marist. In net, Miranda Lopes made nine saves.

Canisius was quick off the opening draw with Santana and Penoyer each scoring twice within the opening 10 minutes to take a 4-0 lead. McArthur would add one more goal before the frame ended, but a late goal from Oliva Arntsen got Marist on the board and made it a 5-1 contest heading into the second quarter.

The Griffs and Red Foxes would exchange the opening two goals of the second frame, but a quick two-goal burst from Marist brought the visitors within two, 6-4, with 2:10 left. Santana would extend the Canisius lead back to three with less than two minutes left, sending the Griffs to the locker room in front, 7-4.

Canisius would score the first two goals of the third quarter, courtesy of Tifft and junior Riley Davis, to extend its lead to five with 3:04 left in the frame.

Marist would work its way back into the contest, scoring the final two goals of the third quarter before notching the first three tallies of the fourth to tie the game at 9-all with 13:01 left.

Still tied with less than eight minutes to play, McArthur would break the deadlock when she fired the ball past Lopes and put the Griffs back on top, 10-9.

Marist would muster one final offensive push with less than three minutes remaining, but an errant pass by the Red Foxes would let Canisius recover the ball and run out the clock to secure the one-goal win.
