Graduate midfielder Skylar McArthur scored a career-high seven goals, but it was not enough for Canisius as it fell to Iona, 19-14, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

With the loss, the Golden Griffins moved to 6-4 on the year and 1-2 in MAAC play while the Gaels improved to 7-4 and 1-2 in conference action.

Paige Stachura and Sophie Socker added in two goals apiece while on the defensive side of the ball, Catherine Wall notched a career-high five ground balls. In net, Jody Chu made three saves for the Blue and Gold.

The Gaels scored the opening three goals of the contest before graduate student attacker Ivy Santana got Canisius on the board to make it a 3-1 contest with 3:46 left in the opening frame.

After back-to-back Iona goals allowed the home side extend its lead to 5-1, the Griffs opened up a brief 3-0 scoring spurt, notching the final goal of the first quarter before scoring back-to-back goals to open the second to make it a one-goal game with 10:29 left in the half.

Iona would score seven of the next eight goals to close the half ahead, 12-5. Out of halftime, Canisius would score twice in the opening five minutes, with McArthur notching both goals to complete her hat trick, to make it 12-7 with 11:55 left in the frame.

The Peterborough, Ontario, native would score two more goals before the quarter ended, but goals from Micaela Fitzpatrick and Alexa Skoubas would counter the Griffs' two tallies and let the Gales enter the final frame ahead, 14-9.

Canisius struck for the first three goals of the fourth quarter, with Stachura, McArthur and Kaitlyn Salce each finding the back of the net to trim the Griffs deficit to three, 15-12, with 10:42 left.

Iona would take control from there, scoring six of the final eight goals of the game to secure the victory. McArthur would score both of Canisius' final two goals to cap her career day.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"We started off really slow on both sides of the ball. At halftime we made some adjustments and got within two but couldn't get out of the hole we created for ourselves."
