Men’s Lacrosse Stymied by Saints in Overtime

Zac Schuette scored with 12 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Siena to a 10-9 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Schuette's game-winning goal capped a five-point day for the graduate attackman as he recorded three goals and added two assists for the Saints (4-4, 2-2 MAAC). George Rusnak tallied two goals for the visitors while five players finished with single tallies each.

Chris Yanchoris recorded 20 saves between the pipes for Siena, highlighted by a nine-save performance in the third quarter.

Redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly and freshman Kevin Carney tallied two goals apiece for the Golden Griffins (2-8, 1-3 MAAC). Freshman Micah Hanson went 17-of-23 at the face-off X with a season-high 15 ground balls while sophomore goalie Tommy Kunz made 15 saves.

Playing under snowy and windy conditions, the teams headed to overtime tied at 9-all. After both teams failed to score on their first possession of overtime, Canisius had the ball in the final minute of the extra session, but were unable to beat Yanchoris, who made a stop on an attempt from senior Nathan Conry.

The Saints collected the loose ball after Conry's attempt and advanced the ball up the field, where they were able to work it to Schuette, who beat Kunz with a bounce shot from distance on the left side to give Siena the victory.

Earlier in the contest, the Griffs raced out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Conry and Carney before the Saints answered back with five unanswered goals to hold a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter.

Hanson halted the Siena surge with his first collegiate tally and junior Hunter Parucki buried a feed from Conry to pull the Griffs within one, 5-4, with a little more than nine minutes to play in the second. The teams exchanged single tallies over the remainder of the frame to send the Saints to the locker room with a 6-5 edge.

The teams traded two-goal bursts during the third quarter, with senior Kyle Brunsch and Kelly opening up the scoring in the frame to give Canisius an 8-7 lead, only to have Siena counter with markers from Schuette and Liam Hassett to make it a 9-8 contest heading into the fourth.

Junior Keegan Kozack opened the fourth-quarter scoring to bring the game level, 8-8. Schuette notched his second of the contest to push the Saints back in front with 9:49 to play in regulation, only to see Carney knot the game once again on a feed from Parucki with 8:30 to play in the frame, setting the stage for Schuette's overtime heroics.
