Stachura Nets 100th Career Point as Women's Lacrosse Thumps Youngstown State

Senior midfield Paige Stachura notched her 100th career point as Canisius defeated Youngstown State, 15-3, in NCAA women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in at the Demske Sports Complex. With the win, the Golden Griffins finish non-conference play at 5-2 while the Penguins dip to 2-6.
 
Leading the way for Canisius was graduate student attacker Ivy Santana who registered four goals to complement Stachura's three goals. Graduate student Skylar McArthur and freshman Meg Hiltz each notched two assists while on the defensive side of the ball, junior Jill Galanti picked up five ground balls and caused a team-high two turnovers. In net, freshman Jody Chu made six saves over three quarters of action with fellow freshman, Delaney Hayden, picked up three of her own in 15 minutes of action.
 
As for the Penguins, their three goals came from Erin Clark, Jordan Miller and Ali Korin. Miler also caused the only turnover for Youngstown State. In net, Mikaela Staranko made six saves in 30 minutes of play, while Jacqueline Cornell tallied seven of her own during the second half.
 
After exchanging the first two goals of the quarter, the Griffs would close the quarter on a 3-0 run, with goals from McArthur, Stachura and Caroline Netti, to take a 4-1 lead into the second stanza.
 
During the second quarter, Stachura made history as she joined the 100-point club with a pair of goals during the second quarter.
 
 
Santana and junior Avery Penoyer would each chip in one more goal for the Griffs to open up an 8-1 lead for Canisius at the half.
 
Out of halftime, freshman Meg Hiltz was able to extend the Griffs momentum from the end of the first half as she notched her first career goal to make it a 9-1 game.
 
 
After a goal from the Penguins, the Griffs would go on a 4-0 run to end the frame, with Santana scoring three goals of her own, to start the running clock and enter the fourth quarter up, 13-2.
 
Canisius would tack on two more goals in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Hailey Rooney and Samantha Detor, to secure the victory.
 
Game Notes:
  • For Detor and Rooney, they each scored their first career goals for the Blue and Gold.
  • Santana established a new career-high in goals scored with four.
  • Galanti's five ground balls represent a new career-high
  • This is the first time since April 15, 2017 when the Blue and Gold defeated Quinnipiac, 22-4, that Canisius held an opponent to less than five goals.
  • Canisius held a 43-21 advantage in shots, highlighted by a 16-3 edge in the first quarter.

The Griffs will begin MAAC play as they welcome Manhattan to Buffalo, N.Y. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. on March 25.
