Women's Lacrosse Fourth Quarter Comeback Stopped by Manhattan

Canisius' late fourth-quarter surge against Manhattan fell one goal short as they dropped a 9-8 decision in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Jaspers moved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play while the Golden Griffins slipped to 5-3 and 0-1 in conference action.
 
Julianna Iovine paced Manhattan with three goals while Ava Fernandez notched three points on two goals and an assist.  Jennifer McPherson tallied a team-high three ground balls and two caused turnovers. In net, Ashley Gambardella made 10 saves in the win.
 
Canisius was led by Caroline Netti and Skylar McArthur, who notched three goals apiece. On the defensive side of the ball, reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Jody Chu and Jill Galanti each had a game-high four ground balls while Paige Stachura won seven draw controls, setting a career high. For Chu, she also made five saves in the loss.
 
Down 9-5 with less than 13 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, junior Riley Davis used a free-position shot to cut into the Jaspers lead and make it a 9-6 game. Less than 30 seconds later, Netti would complete her hat trick off an assist from Ivy Santana to bring the Griffs to within two with 10:35 left.
 
 
After a defensive battle over the middle of the frame, Skylar McArthur completed her own hat trick with 5:44 to play to make it a one-goal game. The Manhattan defense would step up from there, not allowing another Canisius goal, with Gambardella making one final save with 30 seconds to play to seal the victory.
 
Earlier in the contest, the Griffs struck first as it scored scored twice in the opening five minutes to take the lead. 
 
 
Manhattan would take control of the game following Canisius' early salvo, scoring the five five goals of the opening frame to enter halftime ahead, 5-2.

The Griffs and Jaspers would go back-and-forth in the third quarter, with McArthur finding the back of the net twice and Netti tallying her second of the day, but the Griffs would find themselves down, 8-5, entering the final frame. Iovine would score the eventual game-winning goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter for the Jaspers to make it a 9-5 game and ensure the Jasper victory.

Today we got away from our scout and played undisciplined in the first half which created a hole we just couldn't get ourselves out of. Our defense really gave us a chance to stay in the game but we did not capitalize when we needed to the most
 
Game Notes

• Freshman defender Briaunna D'Andrade made her first career start for the Blue and Gold.
• The Blue and Gold were perfect in clears, going 14-for-14 while Manhattan went 13-for-20.
• This is the 13th time in program history that Canisius played Manhattan in its first conference game of the season. The Griffs overall record against the Jaspers slips to 13-11.
• Stachura saw her point streak come to an end after 23 games.
• Netti was a perfect 2-for-2 in free-position shots.
 
Up Next
The Griffs will head up north to face Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara on March 29. Opening draw from Lewiston, N.Y., is set for 7 p.m.
