Women's Lacrosse Defeats Robert Morris for First Home Victory of 2023

Canisius limited Robert Morris to just three goals during the opening three quarters en route to a 12-5 victory in collegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Golden Griffins see their record improve to 4-2, while the Colonials tumble to 1-5.

Graduate student midfielder Skylar McArthur led Canisius with four goals while Paige Stachura added in three goals and an assist for four points. On the defensive side of the ball, freshman goalie Jody Chu nabbed five ground balls to compliment her five saves while Stachura added in four ground balls and a caused turnover. Fellow captain, Camryn Luucarelli, and junior Meghan Ellis each caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

Gianna Anthony led Robert Morris with two goals. Kelsey Nelson notched the lone assist for the visitors while tallying a goal of her own. Maggie Boyle accumulated five ground balls for the Colonials, while in net, Jamie Keller made six saves in the defeat.

Canisius roared out of the gate, scoring the first five goals of the game to amass a 5-0 lead with eight minutes left in the opening frame. During the opening run, graduate student Ivy Santana netted her first career goal in a Blue and Gold uniform.

The Colonials would score their first goal of the afternoon, courtesy of Nelson, with 6:59 to play in the opening frame, but neither team would find the back of the net the rest of the frame, giving the Griffs a 5-1 advantage afer 15 minutes.

After a defensive second quarter that saw the teams trade single tallies, the Canisius offense woke up during the beginning stages of the third, scoring three unanswered goals in the first five minutes to take a  9-2 lead with 10:49 left. Robert Morris would add a late goal from Gianna Anthony to cut the deficit to six entering the fourth quarter.

After scoring the first two goals of the final frame, courtesy of Stachura and McArthur, Sophie Socker found an open lane and fired the ball past the Colonials' Keller for her first career goal.

Each side would score two more times to end the game and seal the Griffs' seven-goal victory in their home debut.
