Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Suffers Setback at Pitt

Pitt led wire-to-wire as it recorded a 16-8 victory over Canisius in collegiate women's lacrosse action Tuesday at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-2 overall while the Golden Griffins took their first loss of the year to move to 3-1.

Maeve Murray scored six goals to pace a potent Pitt attack with Jill French and Molly Carter chipping in two goals each. Hannah Van Middel made nine saves in almost 54 minutes of action. Pitt backup goalie Molly Cain made two saves of her own late in the fourth quarter when she entered the contest.

Caroline Netti and Skylar McArthur paced the Griffs with four and three goals, respectively, while Paige Stachura added in a goal of her own. On defense, Jill Galanti picked up a season-high five ground balls while Stachura led the Blue and Gold in caused turnovers with three.

Pitt kept Canisius controlled both ends of the field in the first quarter as it raced out to a 5-0 lead during the opening 15 minutes of play.

After the Panthers extended their lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter, Canisius cracked the scoreboard for the first time off a goal from McArthur with 8:02 left in the half. Two late goals by Netti with under two minutes before the break allowed Canisius to negate an earlier pair of goals from Pitt's French and enter the half down five, 8-3.

Pitt tallied the first four goals of the third quarter to expand their lead to 12-3, but the Griffs offense would have a brief spark, scoring three goals in the final 5:33 of the frame, two of which came from McArthur and one from Netti, to head to the fourth quarter down 13-6.

Canisius would score two more goals in the fourth, courtest of Netti and Stachura, but Pitt would add three of their own to secure their victory.

Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"We started off really slow today and dug ourselves a hole we just couldn't get out of. Our defense caused a lot of turnovers and we dominated on ground balls. There are positives to take away from today's game, but we need to learn from this and put together a better performance in our next game on Saturday."

Game Notes:
- With her one goal in the contest, Stachura has now recorded at least one point in 20 consecutive contests. The streak dates back to Feb. 12, 2022 against Bucknell where she finished the day with three points.
- This was the second meeting between Canisius and Pitt, with the series now tied, 1-1.
- Netti and McArthur each recorded their third game this season of three-or-more goals.
