Women's Basketball Taken Down by Iona

Iona used a strong first quarter to down Canisius, 67-43, in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Ketsia Athias paced Iona (22-5, 17-1 MAAC) with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while Natalia Otkhmezuri chipped in 11 points of her own. As a team, the Gales shot over 50 percent from the floor, finishing 27-of-52 (.519).

The Golden Griffins (8-17, 5-11 MAAC) were led by junior guard Giana Hernandez-Boulden, who scored a career-high 15 points. Freshman forward Sisi Eleko finished the contest with her second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points while adding in 12 rebounds. As a team, Canisius shot just 28.8 percent from the field, going 17-of-59.

Iona controlled the first quarter, limiting Canisius to just five points on 2-of-12 shooting while scoring 21 points of their own as they went 9-of-17 from the floor during the opening 10 minutes. Hernandez-Boulden would notch both of the Griffs baskets in the quarter.

After exchanging the opening two baskets of the second quarter, the Canisius offense would wake up, scoring 11 of the next 13 points  to cut the deficit to 25-18. Hernandez-Boulden would again be the fire starter for the offense, scoring five of the Griffs 11 points.

After a basket from Iona's Athias made it a 27-18 contest with 3:19 left, each team would remain scoreless for the rest of the half, sending the Gaels to the locker room with a nine-point advantage.

a 15-4 spurt to open the third quarter allowed Iona to create some breathing room as it enjoyed a 44-22 advantage midway through the frame. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way, giving the Gaels a 51-30 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Canisius rattle off seven unanswered points, highlighted by a pair of baskets from sophomore Athena Lexa, early in the stanza to pull within 16. That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as the Gaels finished the contest on a 14-6 run to complete the 24-point victory.

Game Notes:

• This was the first start for freshman forward Chloe Chard Peloquin since Dec. 10 at Youngstown State.
• Today's starting lineup of Cheyenne Stubbs, Lexa, Chard Peloquin, Garrelts and Eleko is the youngest the Griffs have put out this season as four of the five players are underclassmen.
• Along with her career high in points, Hernandez-Boulden also established a new career-high in minutes played with 24.
• Eleko is the only Canisius player to record two double-doubles this season.
• Saturday's game marked the sixth time this season and fifth in MAAC play that Canisius has limited an opponent to less than 10 points in the second quarter as they held the Gaels to just six points. The last instance came on Feb. 11 at Marist when the Griffs held the Red Foxes to just six points during the second stanza.
