Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Midweek Matchup at Michigan

Michael Boehm and Josh Zawada combined for 15 points as Michigan defeated Canisius, 19-8, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Boehm posted a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists while Zawada finished with three goals and three assists to pace a potent Wolverines (2-1) attack. Three players – Jacob Jackson, Aidan Mulholland and Ryan Cohen - chipped in two goals each.

Senior Kyle Brunsch and redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly tallied two goals each while junior Hunter Parucki notched three points on a goal and two assists for the Golden Griffins (0-3). Sophomore Tommy Kunz matched his season high as he recorded 16 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Michigan tallied the first two goals of the game before Kelly got Canisius on the board at the 6:04 mark of the opening frame to cut the Griffs deficit in half.

The teams traded goals during the later stages of the stanza before Boehm capped the first-quarter scoring with a goal in the closing seconds to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead after one.

Michigan carried its momentum into the second quarter, notching the first five goals of the stanza to build a 9-2 advantage. Senior Jackson Naylor temporarily halted the Wolverines' surge as he notched his first goal of the season with 4:42 to play before halftime, but tallies by Zawada and Boehm made it an 11-3 contest in favor of the hosts at the break.

A low-scoring third quarter saw Michigan record the opening three goals of the frame to stretch its lead to double digits before Fridge netted his second of the campaign with 42 seconds to play to make it a 14-4 contest heading into the final frame.

In the fourth, Canisius used a 4-1 spurt midway through the quarter, highlighted by back-to-back tallies from Brunsch, to pull the Griffs within eight, 16-8, with less than eight minutes to play.

Michigan responded to the Canisius push, however, recording the last three goals of the game to close out the 11-goal victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"It's a big rebound effort from Saturday. As a team, we came out with the focus and intensity that we lacked on Saturday, which was great to see that that resilience come through. Now we have to be able to take that mindset and eliminate the types errors that allowed Michigan to capitalize with some goals that created the gap in the score we saw during the second quarter. But, in terms of building towards what we've set out to accomplish this year, we're excited about the effort and now we got to put the X's and O's in place and start making the right decisions.

"Every game is an opportunity to continue to learn as a group. Every day we're on the field as a group we're getting experience and getting a little bit better. But, when you step between the lines, no one cares how much or how little you've played in your career, whether you're a senior or a freshman getting on the field for the first time. So, what we've got to learn is that when you step on the field, you're just another player in a jersey that's expected to go out and make plays. You have to earn that opportunity to do that. That's the next step that we've got to take as a group.

"In the fourth quarter we saw a group that didn't have any quit in them. They wanted to continue to play regardless of what scoreboard said, because part of our identity is being a team that competes day in and day out, no matter what the conditions, what the score, whatever it may be. We had that again today, which was important and hopefully we use it to help carry us here into this coming weekend as we've got a quick turnaround for another game Saturday against a good Robert Morris squad."
