Stubbs Double-Double Helps Women's Basketball Down Fairfield

Box Score Paced by a double-double from sophomore guard Cheyenne Stubbs and a game-high 22 points from graduate guard Vannessa Garrelts, Canisius defeated Fairfield, 73-60, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Friday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
Stubbs tallied 17 points points and added a career-high 11 rebounds to post her first double-double of the season for the Golden Griffins (8-17, 5-11 MAAC). Garrelts, meanwhile, tied her career-high in scoring was she was 5-of-11 from the field an a nearly perfect 9-for-10 effort at the free-throw line to go along with a team-high seven assists.

Freshman forward Sisi Eleko joined Stubbs and Garrelts in double figures as she chipped in 12 points of her own as Canisius shot over 50% from the floor, finishing the contest by going 26-of-49 (.531) from the field.

The Stags (13-12, 9-7 MAAC) were paced by Kate Peek's 15 points with Andrea Hernangomez and Callie Cavanaugh adding in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hernangomez also collected nine rebounds. As a team, Farifield went just 21-of-62 (.339) from the field.
 
For the first time since Nov. 22 at Colgate, Canisius limited an opponent to single digits in the first quarter as they kept the Stags to just eight points on its way to building a 19-8 advantage after 10 minutes. The Griffs shot better than 60 percent from the field during the opening frame, connecting on 7 of their 11 field-goal attempts in the quarter (.636). 
 
The Griffs stayed hot to begin the second quarter, knocking down three consecutive makes from deep, with Stubbs connecting on back-to-back triples to expand their lead to 28-8 with 6:08 to play before halftime.
 
 
The Griffs and Stags traded scores to conclude the quarter, with the Griffs getting points from five different players to end the half ahead, 39-19.
 
Fairfield opened the second half on a 7-1 spurt, punctuated by a 3-pointer from Peek, to chip into the Canisius lead, shifting the score to 40-26 with 7:39 remaining in the third. 
  
Canisius and Fairfield would exchange baskets the remainder of the way to put the Griffs in front, 51-33, heading into the fourth quarter. 
 
Fairfield mounted one last comeback attempt at the start of the fourth quarter, using a 19-8 run to cut the Griffs lead to single digits, 59-52, off a traditional 3-point play from Peek with 3:24 remaining.
 
Less than a minute later, Fairfield's Janelle Brown and the Fairfield bench would each receive a technical foul, resulting in Garrelts heading to free-throw line for four shots. The guard connected on all four attempts to put the Griffs back up by double-digits, 63-52, with 2:41 to play.
 
After the free-throws, Canisius would close the game by outscoring the Stags, 10-8, to secure the victory. Garrelts would notch six of the Griffs final 10 points.

Game Notes:

• This is the ninth game this season that Canisius limited an opponent to less than ten points in a quarter.
• Stubbs recorded double-digit rebounds for the first time in her career as she surpassed her previous personal best of seven against Quinnipiac on Jan. 27, 2022. 
• This is the first time since Feb. 8, 2020 that Canisius defeated Fairfield and the first instance since Jan. 22, 2017, that Canisius won by double digits against the Stags.
• For the first time since Dec. 7 against St. Bonaventure, the Blue and Gold shot 50%-or-better in a game. 
• Stubbs is the second Griff to post a double-double this season and the first since Eleko finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds Jan. 14 at Mount St. Mary's.
