Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Defeats Detroit Mercy, 16-5

Senior Paige Stachura and junior Caroline Netti tallied four goals apiece to pace Canisius in a 16-5 victory over Detroit Mercy in collegiate women's lacrosse action Sunday at the Detroit Country Day Indoor Field in Beverly Hills, Mich.

Preseason All-MAAC selection Skylar McArthur and graduate student Kaitlyn Salce provided additional scoring depth for the Golden Griffins (1-0) as both players finished with three points, with McArthur recording a hat trick and Salce finishing with a goal and two assists. Freshman goalie Jody Chu made 10 saves on 15 shots to earn the win in her collegiate debut.

The Titans (0-1) were led by Taylor Rocha, who notched a team-high two goals while Maddy Camm picked up three ground balls. In net, Meredeth Leavell made ten saves before being replaced by Kayleigh Aitken who made one save of her own.

Trailing 2-0 late in the first quarter, Salce found the back of the Titans net to get Canisius on the board and spark a three-goal spurt that would give the Griffs their first lead of the game, 3-2.

After surrendering the first goal of the second period, Canisius would come alive, outscoring the Titans, 5-1, for the remainder of the quarter to take an 8-4 edge at halftime. Leading the way was Netti, who scored twice to complete the first-half hat trick while Stachura, McArthur and junior Riley Davis also found the back of the net.

For the first time in program history, Canisius kept an opponent scoreless during a quarter as the Griffs did not allow a single goal in the third as it limited Detroit Mercy to just three shots. The Blue and Gold would also add in six goals of their own, two of which were off conversions of a free-position shot by Stachura and freshman Maggie Tifft, to enter the fourth quarter ahead, 14-4.

The Blue and Gold would tack on two more goals in the final frame, courtesy of McArthur and Claire Netti, to seal the 16-5 victory
