Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener at Hobart

Hobart scored the first five goals of the game to take control early on its way to a 20-14 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Poole Sports Dome in Geneva, N.Y.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, the Statesmen were paced by Anthony Dattellas, who led all players with eight points on seven goals and an assist. Alex Rosa finished with a hat trick while three players – Will Delano, John Herlihy and Jack Grooms – finished with two goals apiece.

Freshman Kevin Carney tallied four goals to lead the Golden Griffins attack while redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly tallied a hat trick. Junior Keegan Kozack (2g, 1a) and sophomore Patrick Mitchell (1g, 2a) notched three points apiece. Sophomore keeper Tommy Kunz finished with 16 saves in his second career start.

Hobart took control of the game early in the contest, scoring five goals in a 7:40 stretch midway through the opening frame to build a 5-0 cushion.

Sophomore Jaxon Fridge would temporarily halt the Statesmen's early momentum with the Griffs' opening tally, but Hobart would use another spurt, this time a 6-0 stretch that featured four goals from Dattellas, to grab an 11-1 advantage early in the second quarter.

The teams traded goals over the final 10:30 of the second quarter to give Hobart a 14-4 edge at the break.

Canisius outscored Hobart by a 3-2 margin in the third quarter, using tallies from Kelly, Carney and junior Hunter Parucki to make it a 16-7 contest heading into the fourth.

Hobart tallied three of the first four goals of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game, 19-8, with 8:59 to play.

Canisius closed the game on a 6-1 run, capped by a pair of tallies from Carney, to determine the six-goal final margin.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita Post Game Comments
"Obviously, that's not the start in the first quarter that we would have liked. Sporting them an eight-goal lead at the end of the first put us in a hole that we couldn't overcome. However, for the remainder of the game, we started to settle in, get our composure and play much better. There's lots to learn from here and to get better at, with some guys get their first Division I action and just getting back into actual gameplay in general. So, not what we thought we would come out with today, but we're going to look at the tape and start getting better tomorrow at practice.

"Once the opening whistle occurred, we definitely had some jitters that you could see all over the field. We had some opportunities early on and we couldn't cash in and maybe settle ourselves into a rhythm and Hobart was able to jump on us and kind of get us in a little bit of a shell there and it took us a while to shake off that initial punch. We have to figure out a better way to start games because you're not going to be successful over the course of the season if you don't start out strong.

"The guys didn't pack it in and quit on each other. The energy on the bench and on the sidelines was positive. Guys were still engaged, supporting one another throughout the duration of the game. When good plays were being made, some of our injured guys were helping to mentor guys when they were coming off the field about things that they could improve on, some constructive criticism. There was no finger pointing. It was guys working together collaboratively. That's going to be the big thing; being able to continue to band together as a group as we go forward. Learning not only from our mistakes, but also celebrating our successes when they happen on the field and sticking together as a team."
