Men's Lacrosse Falters Against Bellarmine in Home Opener

Bellarmine's Benny O'Rourk scored four goals as it defeated Canisius, 14-4, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly led the Golden Griffins (0-2) with four points as he recorded a hat trick and added an assist. Sophomore Patrick Mitchell scored the only other goal for the Griffs.

Freshman Micah Hanson tied Bellarmine's Jacob Berggren for the game-high in ground balls with seven. In net, sophomore Tommy Kunz made 10 saves for the Blue and Gold.

Along with O'Rourk's four goals, the Knights (2-1) also found offensive production from Wilson Murphree, Christian DellaRocco and Tayo Oladunmoye, who each had four goals. JC Higginbotham made nine saves on 13 shots faces between the pipes for Bellarmine.

The Knights controlled the opening quarter of the contest, keeping Canisius off the scoreboard in the first quarter while adding three goals of their own to take a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes of action.

Bellarmine would tally three more goals in the second frame to take a 6-0 lead, but a goal by Kelly with 33 seconds left in the half got the Griffs on the board during the man-up situation for the first time in the contest.

After being kept scoreless in the third quarter and going down 9-1, the Canisius offense found a small spark towards the end of the game, scoring three goals with less than eight minutes to go. Kelly would score the final goal of the contest and complete his hat trick with less than two minutes to play on an assist from junior Hunter Parucki.

Postgame Comments from head coach Mark Miyashita:
"We did not carry out our game plan offensively with 16 of our 17 turnovers coming from the O-end of the field. That put the defense in a tough situation, which is going to lead to opportunities for our opponent to score. We have to value the ball and be better as a unit in that end of the field."

Game Notes

• Kelly recorded his second hat trick in as many games and eighth career game with at least three goals.
• Today's contest was the second ever meeting between the Griffs and Knights. The series is now tied, 1-1.

• The Blue and Gold were nearly perfect on clears today, finishing the contest 14-of-15.
• Kunz has made 10-or-more saves in both contests this season.
