Volleyball Swept by Niagara

The Canisius volleyball team was swept by the Niagara Purple Eagles, 3-0, in the second meeting of the two Battle of the Bridge rivals Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (3-11, 1-5 MAAC) were paced by freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert, who had eight kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Ella Bourque added 15 assists and freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma collected a match-high two solo blocks.

The Purple Eagles (5-9, 5-9 MAAC) were led by Cassie Seminoff with 12 kills and 10 digs, while her teammate Jenna Vogen collected 10 kills of her own. Kylie Blessing notched 22 assists, while at the net, Janiah Robinson swatted seven blocks with one block solo.

After dropping the first set, 25-11, Canisius would start the second set hot, using a 5-0 run to begin the frame with junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha tallying four of the Griffs first five kills of the set.

Still, the Purple Eagles would tie the match later in the frame, 10-all, before using an 11-1 spurt, paced by four kills from Peyton Lee, to grab a 21-11 lead. Even with a late 4-1 spurt by the Griffs, it would be in vain as the home side would win, 25-15, and open up a 2-0 match lead.

With the two sides tied 11-all in the penultimate frame, the Purple Eagles would take control of the frame, using a lengthy 10-2 run to stymie the Blue and Gold attack and build a 21-13 cushion. Even with a late rally by Canisius, Niagara would seal the match with Lee's eighth kill of the day to take the set, 25-17, complete the sweep.
