Manhattan Battles Back to Beat Men’s Basketball in Overtime

Manhattan guard Ant Nelson scored a team-high 22 points to help lead the visiting Jaspers' comeback effort, as Manhattan defeated Canisius 81-74 in overtime in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win ended Manhattan's three-game slide, and improved the team to 7-13 overall and 5-6 in MAAC games. The Golden Griffins fell to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in MAAC games with their third-straight defeat.

Nelson ended the day by shooting 8-for-19 from the field, 1-for-3 from 3-point land and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, while also recording five assists and four rebounds. Elven of Nelson's 22 points came in the game's second half and overtime period, and he also reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career with a pair of free-throws in the game's first half. Nick Brennen, Josh Roberts and Samir Stewart scored 16 points apiece in the victory as the Jaspers ended the game shooting 50.0 percent (30-for-60) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from 3-point range and 68.2 percent (15-for-22) from the free-throw line.

For Canisius, four Griffs scored in double-figures, led by graduate student Jordan Henderson, who posted 22 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Xzavier Long recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore Tre Dinkins and redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie added 11 points, each. Canisius shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the field in the loss, while connecting on 11-of-29 3-point tries (37.9 percent) and 9-of-15 free-throws (60.0 percent).

The Griffs took a six-point lead at 67-61 with 4:51 remaining after Staveskie hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key off an assist from Long. Canisius' lead stood at 68-63 with 2:38 remaining after Henderson made 1-of-2 free-throws, but the Jaspers tied the game thanks to a lay-up by Nelson and a traditional 3-point play with 1:26 remaining after Adam Cisse scored a lay-up and made the ensuing free-throw to knot the score at 68-68.

On Canisius' next possession, Henderson put the Blue and Gold up 71-68 with 1:08 left to play with one of his three 3-pointers, but that would end up being the final time the Griffs would score until 1:05 left in overtime, as Manhattan outscored Canisius 13-3 in the game's final 5:43. A traditional 3-point play by Brennen knotted the game at 71-71 with 43 seconds left in regulation time, and then the Jaspers scored the first seven points of overtime to take a 78-71 lead with 1:20 left in the extra session.
