Hockey Falls to Niagara to Close Out Battle of the Bridge Series

Glebs Prohorenkovs tallied two goals in the second period to lift Niagara to a 5-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Josef Mysak, Ryan Cox and Carter Randklev also scored for the Purple Eagles (13-11-2, 7-9-2 AHA), who managed a split of the two-game series with the win. Chad Veltri recorded 23 saves in goal for Niagara to earn the victory.

Senior Ryan Miotto and junior Randy Hernandez scored for the Golden Griffins (8-13-3, 6-7-3 AHA). Senior Jacob Barczewski made 25 saves between the pipes.

Niagara jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, striking twice in a 57-second span during the opening five minutes of the contest.

Mysak opened the scoring at the 3:29 mark of the first, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Barczewski from the right face-off circle for his second of the season.

Cox doubled the Purple Eagles lead moments later, slipping a centering feed from Carter Randklev between the legs of Barczewski for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The teams traded special-teams goals during the opening two minutes of the second period.

Prohorenkovs extended the Niagara margin to 3-0 with a shorthanded tally 13 seconds into the frame as he deposited Christian Gorscak's cross-ice feed past a sprawling Barczewski during a 2-on-1 break before Miotto answered back for the Griffs 49 seconds later, firing a wrist shot past a screened Veltri for a power-play goal to make it a 3-1 contest.

Prohorenkovs restored the Purple Eagles three-goal cushion in the final seconds of the second, finishing off his second odd-man rush of the frame to give Niagara a 4-1 edge heading into the third.

Randklev expanded the Niagara margin to 5-1 near the midway point of the third with his third of the weekend before Hernandez closed out the scoring, beating Veltri from close range while on the rush with less than four minutes to play to determine the final margin.
