Alfaro Named Among Top Second Basemen in the Nation By Extra Innings Softball

Canisius sophomore Saige Alfaro has been named among the top 20 second basemen in the country by Extra Innings Softball, the website announced Thursday afternoon. Among the 20 players earning the honor, 11 play for Power Five programs.

Alfaro earned a bountiful of awards after batting .369 in her freshman campaign. The Chula Vista, Calif., native was the MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year, an All-MAAC First Team selection and an NFCA Great Lakes All-Region Second Team member.

In 49 games in 2022, Alfaro had 52 hits, highlighted by 14 multi-hit performances. She also crossed the plate 27 times and was one of five players to steal 10-or-more bases for the Golden Griffins last season.

Canisius opens the season on Feb. 17 in Charleston, S.C., at the Cougar Classic. The Griffs will face tournament host College of Charleston at 5:30 p.m. to open the event.
