Volleyball Defeats Qunnipiac in Five Sets

Led by 29 kills from sophomore outside hitter Taylor Baldwin, the Canisius volleyball team defeated Quinnipiac, 3-2, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action on Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Golden Griffins won with scores of 25-15, 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, and 15-7 across five sets. Canisius' record moves to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play while the Bobcats slip to 1-8 on the season and 0-2 in league play with the setback.

The Griffs were white hot out of the gate, opening the match on a 9-2 run led by kills from Baldwin and senior outside hitter Ella Loussia. Even with a slight Bobcat spurt in the middle of the set, a 7-2 run coupled with a 3-0 stretch by the Griffs to end the set saw them take the 25-15 set victory and 1-0 match lead.

Entering the second set, the two sides were stuck in a deadlock until a 5-0 run saw Quinnipiac take a sizable lead. The Griffs would remain in striking distance the rest of the set, even going on a 4-0 spurt captained by Loussia and Baldwin, but Quinnipiac would win the set, 25-20, and tie the match at 1-1.

Similar to how Canisius started the first set, Quinnipiac took control early in the third frame with an 8-2 run of its own. After cutting the deficit to five, the Griffs rattled off five unanswered points, highlighted by three straight service aces from Loussia to tie the match, 12-12. Each side was unable to pull away until the end when a kill from Quinnipiac's Alexandra Tennon ignited a 6-2 spurt to clinch the 25-20 victory and 2-1 match lead for the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac again took control early in the fourth set, opening the frame on a 7-1 run to force an early timeout from the Griffs. Graduate student defensive specialist Stella Johnson was able to lead the Griffs on a 5-0 rally once she began to serve thanks to two service aces. The Griffs and Bobcats remained close until the final point with senior middle blocker Elle Shult received a ball from freshman setter Ella Bourque to nab a kill and tie the match 2-2 and take the set, 25-23.

Tied through the first four points in the final set, Canisius pulled away with a 5-1 spurt due in part to kills from Baldwin and Loussia. Up 10-7, the Griffs never looked back, scoring the final five points of the frame to end the match with Baldwin picking up four straight kills and Shult tallying the match-winning kill.

Baldwin posted a match-high 29 kills while Bourque chipped in 55 assists. As a team, the Griffs totaled a season-best .307 (66-16-163) hitting percentage.

For the Bobcats, Giorgia Donghi led the way with 20 kills and Damla Gunes tied Ella Bourque in assists with 55. The Bobcats hit at a slightly lower clip of .294 (65-20-153).
