Romero’s Brace Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Rider in MAAC Opener

Senior forward Jen Romero scored both goals to lift Canisius to a 2-1 victory over Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Romero notched her first two goals of the season to pace the Golden Griffins (3-2-3, 1-0-0 MAAC) in their league debut. Hannah Freeman accounted for the lone goal for the Broncs (3-3-2, 0-1-0 MAAC).

Romero opened the scoring in the 11th minute, heading home junior Tiani Fonoti's cross from just off the back post to give Canisius the early lead.

The score remained in favor of the Griffs until the 76th minute, when Freeman fired a ball from just outside the box that found the left post and ricocheted into the Canisius goal to knot the game at 1-1.

Romero would once again provide the offense spark for Canisius, this time collecting a flick from sophomore Madeline Weltin in the 85th minute and chipping a ball from the middle of the box that Rider keeper Ellie Sciancalepore was able to get a piece of, but was unable to keep from rolling into the goal to put the Griffs in front for good.

Sciancalepore finished with eight saves in goal for Rider while sophomore Jordan Spencer finished with five saves for Canisius.

Game Notes
• Saturday's game marked the 26th meeting between the two programs. The win marked the Griffs first victory against the Broncs since the 2015 season.
• Canisius out-shot Rider by a 23-9 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 15-5 edge in the second half. The 23 shots were a season high, surpassing the previous mark of 18 set against St. Bonaventure on Sept. 7.
• The Griffs attempted all five corner kicks awarded during the game.
• Romero became the first Canisius player with two goals in a game since Fonoti scored twice in the Griffs matchup with Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara on Oct. 20, 2021.
• Romero's goal in the 85th minute was the first game-winning goal of her career.
• Fonoti picked up her second assist of the season on Romero's first-half goal, giving her a team-high eight points this season.
• Weltin notched her second assist of the campaign with her helper on Romero's game-winning goal.
