Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Bucknell

The Canisius volleyball team ended the 2022 Western New York Invitational with a 3-1 loss to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Bison (7-1) took the match by set scores of 25-12, 17-25, 25-20, 25-17. The Golden Griffins fell to 2-7 with the loss.
 
Senior Ella Loussia led the Griffs' offense on Saturday, as she recorded a team-high 13 kills, her fifth-straight match with double-digits in the kills column. Sophomore Emma Mans added a career-high 12 kills in the match, while senior Elle Shult was credited with three service aces and four blocks. Freshman setter Ella Bourque was good for 36 assists, while senior libero Bree Long registered 27 digs in the losing effort. As a team, Canisius hit just .107 for the match, while Bucknell posted a team hitting percentage of .254.
 
Bucknell opened the contest with a 25-12 victory in the first set, but the Blue and Gold answered with a 25-17 victory in set two, led by five kills from Loussia and three kills apiece from Mans and sophomore Taylor Baldwin. After the intermission, the Bison took control of the match and closed out the Griffs after the visiting team put down 28 kills against just five attack errors on its final 74 swings of the afternoon.
 
Bucknell's Catherine Jameson led the way for the Bison, as she collected 13 kills in the winning cause. Her teammate, Valentina Feigl added nine kills and also recorded a solo block and five block assists.
 
Game Notes
• Saturday marked the 15th all-time meeting between Canisius and Bucknell.
• Long's nine digs in the first set allowed her to become just the fourth player in program history to register 1,500-or more career digs.
• Loussia has 10-or more kills in 14 of the last 20 matches she has played in, dating back to the 2021 season.
• For her efforts in the Griffs' last three matches, Loussia was named to the 2022 Western New York Invitational All-Tournament Team.
• Bourque's 36 assists gives her 30-or more assists in seven of her first nine career contests.
 
Up Next
Canisius will open MAAC play on Saturday, Sept. 17, when the Griffs play host to defending MAAC champion Fairfield at the Koessler Athletic Center. The match, which is set to start at 12 p.m., will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
