Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Falls in Derby Match at UB Thursday

Jasmine Guerber scored the lone goal of the game in the 72nd minute and Emily Kelly made three saves to lift the University at Buffalo to a 1-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate women's soccer action Thursday at UB Stadium.

Guerber notched her team-leading fifth goal of the campaign to lead the Bulls (3-1-0) to a victory in the annual matchup of the two crosstown rivals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Spencer made a season-high eight saves between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (1-2-1).

After a tight first half that saw the team combine for just seven total shot attempts, Canisius had a pair of chances to get on the board early in the second frame.

Junior Tiani Fonoti authored the first opportunity as her sliding shot from right side of the box found the crossbar while freshman Mia Iacona was unable to corral the rebound just in front of the left post before it went out of bounds.

Less than 30 seconds later, Iacona came close to getting the Griffs on the scoreboard, but her shot attempt from 25 yards out glanced off the right post and rolled out of play.

UB finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 71st minute as Tess Ford played a ball into Guerber inside the box, where she rolled off a Canisius defender and fired a ball under a diving Spencer and into the goal to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
