Late Goal Dooms Women’s Soccer at Detroit Mercy

Taylor Stanley scored with less than three minutes remaining in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and lift Detroit Mercy to a 2-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate women's soccer action Sunday at Titan Field.

Sophia Blankenship opened the scoring for the Titans (2-1-1) while Jazmine Scott finished with five saves between the pipes for the hosts.

Freshman Emily Brewer accounted for the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (1-1-1). Sophomore Jordan Spencer made three saves in goal for Canisius.

With the scored tied in the final minutes of play, Titan midfielder Julie Ann Piechocki collected a loose ball on the left side of the field and played it into the middle of the box, where Stanley collected it and took one dribble before firing a shot past Spencer and into the lower left-hand corner of the net to give the Titans a 2-1 advantage.

Canisius made a push to tie the game in the final minutes, with their best look coming off the foot of sophomore Emma Oliphant, whose shot attempt in the 90th minute was just wide of the cage.

Earlier in the contest, Detroit Mercy took a 1-0 lead just 4:31 into the contest as Blankenship was able to knock home a cross from Abbey Lodato for her second goal of the campaign.

Brewer brought Canisius level in the 32nd minute when she received a cross from fellow freshman Skylar Cornell at the top of the box and placed a shot inside the right post for her first collegiate tally.
