Fonoti Sparks Women’s Soccer Past Cornell

Junior forward Tiani Fonoti tallied a goal and an assist to pace Canisius in a 2-1 victory over Cornell in collegiate women's soccer action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Freshman Skylar Cornell registered the other goal for the Golden Griffins (1-0-1) while junior goalkeeper Jessica Jones finished with five saves.

Ashley Durik accounted for the lone goal for the Big Red (0-1-0). Nicole Shulman and Erica Fox combined to make two saves in goal for the visitors.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute as Fonoti chipped a shot from the left side that found the crossbar, but the rebound fell right to an unmarked Cornell in the middle of the box, where she deposited it into the middle of the net for her first collegiate tally. Sophomore Emma Oliphant was also credited with an assist on the play.

Fonoti doubled the Canisius advantage to 2-0 at the 36:01 mark of the contest, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity after she was taken down in the box.

Durik got Cornell on the board in the 76th minute, collecting a feed from Aidan Julia Reineman on the left side and working her way into the box before sliding a shot past Jones into the lower right-hand corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game.

The Big Red continued to push for the equalizer, but Jones was up to the task as she turned away a pair of Cornell shot attempts in the final minutes, including a header by Tanum Nelson from close range, to secure the victory.
