Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball takes down Purdue Fort Wayne in Opening day of Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational

The Canisius volleyball team took down host Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-2, to salvage a split of its opening-day matches at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind.

In the Golden Griffins (1-1) opening match against Lindenwood (2-0), a late rally in the third set to tie the game at 20-20 was not enough as the Lions were able to pull away and secure the sweep (17-25, 19-25, 23-25).

Against the Mastodons, Canisius jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead, but Purdue Fort Wayne was able to storm back and force a deciding fifth set. The Griffs would go on an 8-3 run to close out the fifth set, securing head coach Tom Hanna's first victory at Canisius (25-11, 25-19, 14-25, 13-25, 15-11).

MATCH ONE RECAP
After exchanging the opening two points of the match, Canisius went a quick 4-0 run courtesy of kills from Taylor Baldwin and Ella Loussia. A surge by Lindenwood allowed them to take a 15-11 edge heading into the media timeout. The Lions wrapped up the first set with a 4-0 run to secure the 25-17 victory.

Kara Zaucha led the way for Canisius with three straight kills to open the second set. It continued to be a tight affair until a 4-1 stretch by the Lions gave them a 10-6 edge at the media timeout. After the break, the Griffs nabbed two quick points courtesy of an attacking error from the Lions and a service ace from Isabella Bourque to cut the deficit to 10-8. Lindenwood would answer with a 7-3 run of their own to force a timeout from Canisius before sealing the match, 25-17.

During the third set, the Griffs fell behind early but rallied, led by a trio of kills from Zaucha along with kills from Baldwin and Alexa Albinson, to knot the match at 20-20. Lindenwood jumped back ahead, 23-21, but Canisius found a way back with Zaucha and Baldwin again nabbing kills to make it 24-23. Still, the Lions came out on top with a kill from Nyah Wilson to lock up the 25-23 set victory and complete the sweep.

Zaucha led all players with 12 kills while Bourque dished out 26 assists and scored two aces in her NCAA debut. As a team, Canisius was held to a .105 hitting percentage (33-21-114).

Wilson led the way for Lindenwood with 11 kills while her teammate Allie Otten notched a match-high 30 assists. The Lions hit at a .225 clip (40-15-111) for the match.

MATCH TWO RECAP
Just as they did in the first match of the day, the Griffs used a quick run out of the gate to secure a 4-2 lead. After a quick score from Purdue Fort Wayne, the Griffs embarked on a 9-3 run, culminating with a kill from Loussia. The Griffs continued to cruise in the opening set, ending the frame on a 5-1 run to lock up a 25-11 victory and a 1-0 lead.

The Mastodons jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open the second set, but Canisius was able to storm back thanks to a 6-1 run and reclaim the lead, 9-6. Once they were ahead, the Griffs never looked back, leading by as much as six en route to a 25-19 victory.

Purdue Fort Wayne came out hot in the third set, rattling off five unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. A 5-2 spurt moments later stretched their lead to 20-12. Two kills from Baldwin would help cut the deficit to, 22-14, but the Mastodons took the 25-14 victory to extend the match.

The fourth set saw a similar trend to the third with Purdue Fort Wayne going on a pair of lengthy runs to build a comfortable lead as it posted a 25-14 victory to force a decisive fifth set.

With the score tied at 7-all in the final frame, the Griffs would rattle off five straight points with multiple kills from Baldwin to push the Griffs to the brink of victory. Ahead 14-11, Baldwin served the ball to Purdue Fort Wayne and after a rally, the Mastodons mishandled the ball, giving Canisius the 3-2 victory.

Baldwin led the way for Canisius with 14 kills with Bourque serving 35 assists in just her second NCAA match. The Griffs hit at a .199 clip (47-19-141), an improvement from the first match of the day.
