Softball’s Alfaro Voted Canisius Female Rookie of the Year

Canisius softball student-athlete Saige Alfaro has been chosen as the 2021-22 Canisius Female Rookie of the Year, the athletic department announced on Friday.

Alfaro was selected as this year's recipient through a fan vote conducted on GoGriffs.com. The nominees were Ashley Allaire (women's swimming and diving), Isabella Bruno (rowing), Athina Lexa (women's basketball) Erin Weir (women's soccer) and Kara Zaucha (volleyball).

A native of Chula Vista, Calif., Alfaro was named the MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year, All-MAAC First Team and a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection after ranking second on the squad with a .369 batting average and third with a .399 on-base percentage.

She registered 52 hits during the 2022 campaign, recording a base knock in 35 contests and posting 14 multiple-hit performances as she helped the Golden Griffins claim their 13th MAAC regular-season title and the program's ninth MAAC Championship crown.

Named to the NFCA All-Northeast Region Second Team, Alfaro made 49 appearances and 48 starts during her rookie campaign, mostly at second base. She finished the season with a .953 fielding percentage, recording 82 putouts and 60 assists.

The finalists and online voting for the 2021-22 Canisius Male Rookie of the Year will be posted on GoGriffs.com on Monday, June 27.
