Softball Unable to Take Bite out of Gators in NCAA Opener

Skylar Wallace went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI to pace No. 14 seed Florida to a 10-1 victory over Canisius in opening-round action in the Gainesville Regional of the 2022 NCAA Softball Tournament Friday at the Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

Wallace's three-hit performance highlighted a Gators (44-16) lineup that pounded out 10 base knocks in the contest, highlighted by three extra-base hits. Reagan Walsh and Kendra Galby both went 2-for-3 at the plate while Sam Roe was 1-for-2 with three RBI, all of which came on a three-run home run in the second inning.

That would be more than enough offense for the Florida pitching staff, who limited the Golden Griffins to just seven baserunners on one hit, four walks and two hit batsmen. Lexie Delbrey got the start for the Gators and pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out seven. Rylee Trlicek and Natalie Lugo combined to pitch the final two innings in relief of Delbrey, both recording a shutout inning in relief to close out the contest.

Graduate student Lindsi Dennis recorded the lone base hit for the Griffs, posting a single to left field in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Gianna Fazzolari reached base three times without an official plate appearance, finishing a walk and two hit by pitches.

Sophomore pitcher Megan Giese, the MAAC Pitcher of the Year, got the start in the circle for Canisius and lasted 2.1 innings, allowed eight runs (all earned) on seven hits and one walk. She struck out two. Senior Alexis Churchill took over for Giese and pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and one walk.

With the win, Florida advanced into the winner's bracket, where it will face regional two-seed Georgia Tech, who defeated Wisconsin by a 2-1 margin in the first game of the regional, Saturday at 3 p.m. The loss moved Canisius into the loser's bracket, where it will face the Badgers in an elimination contest Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Game Recap
Wallace opened the scoring with a solo shot to center field with two outs in the bottom half of the first before Roe connected on an 0-1 pitch with two gone in the home half of the second for a three-run blast to give the Gators a 4-0 cushion.

The Florida offense continued to roll in the third, using four hits and a pair of Canisius errors to plate four runs in the frame and build an 8-0 advantage. Charla Echols began the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, while a triple by Cheyenne Lindsey two batters later scored the next two runs of the frame. An RBI groundout to second base by Katie Kistler capped the four-run stanza.

Canisius got on the board in the top half of the fourth on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded as freshman pinch runner Sam Weber was able to beat the ball to the plate to make it an 8-1 contest. The Griffs continued to threaten in the inning as they had the bases loaded with no one out, but Roe and Wilkie retired the next three Canisius batters in order to end the threat.

Following a 57-minute lightning delay, play resumed in the bottom half of the fourth, where the Gators used a sacrifice fly from Echols and an RBI single from Walsh to make it a nine-run game and close out the scoring.
