Softball Sees Season Come to a Close with Loss to Wisconsin

Wisconsin scored three runs in its final two at-bats to break open a scoreless contest and defeat Canisius, 3-0, in an elimination bracket game in the Gainesville Regional of the 2022 NCAA Softball Tournament Saturday night at the Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Peyton Bannon recorded a solo home run in the fifth inning and Molly Schlosser hit a two-run double in the sixth to account for the three runs for the Badgers (28-20), who advanced to the elimination bracket final, where they will face Georgia Tech Sunday in a 10 a.m. contest.

Tessa Magnanimo picked up the win in the circle for Wisconsin, entering the game in the top of the fifth and pitching 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit before turning the ball over to Maddie Schwartz, who retired all four batters she faced to pick up her first save of the season.

Sophomore Christie McGee-Ross went 3-for-3 with three singles for the Golden Griffins (32-18), who finished with six base hits in the contest. Graduate student Erin Hufford and freshmen Rosie Gomez and Saige Alfaro accounted for the other three Canisius hits.

Sophomore Megan Giese got the start in the circle for Canisius and pitched all six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. She struck out six.

Game Recap
In a game that was delayed more than four hours due to a pair of weather delays during the opening game of the day between Georgia Tech and Florida, neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Bannon led off the frame with a home run to left field to put the Badgers in front.

Wisconsin put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the sixth as a single by Fiona Girardot and a walk to Lauren Foster set the stage for Schlosser, who roped a double to left center to plate both runners and make it a 3-0 contest.

Canisius' best chance to get on the board came in the third as Canisius used a pair of singles from Hufford and McGee-Ross and a wild pitch to move both players into scoring position with two outs. Wisconsin starter Gabi Salo was able to work out of the jam, however, inducing a fly out to end the frame.
