Offense Leads Baseball to Senior Day Victory Over Monmouth

Senior Dylan Vincent went 3-for-4 with a double and graduate student Vinny Chiarenza hit a three-run home run, aiding Canisius to a 5-3 victory over Monmouth on Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the victory on Senior Day, Canisius secured the No. 3 seed in next week's MAAC Baseball Championship at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins registered 12 hits Friday, 10 of which came in the first four innings off Monmouth starting pitcher Trey Dombroski.

Vincent had the team's lone three-hit day, while junior Mike DeStefano and graduate student Mike Steffan recorded two hits apiece.

Junior Chris Pouliot recorded his seventh victory after pitching five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Fellow junior Tom Peltier struck out eight batters in 3.2 shutout innings of relief. He allowed just one hit while issuing three walks.

Freshman Peyton Consigli secured his sixth save after inheriting the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth.

Dombroski was the losing pitcher for Monmouth (24-25, 12-10). The left-hander gave up all five Canisius runs during his four-inning outing. He walked two and struck out four.

GAME RECAP
After hitting the game's first batter with a pitch, Pouliot retired the next five Monmouth batters he faced.

Monmouth's Brady Mutz and Jake Catalano opened the third with consecutive extra-base hits, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Mutz hit a leadoff triple before scoring on an RBI double by Catalano. Casey Caufield recorded an RBI groundout following a sacrifice bunt, putting Monmouth ahead 2-0.

DeStefano and sophomore Max Grant logged base hits in Canisius' half of the third, setting up Chiarenza's three-run home run that put the Griffs ahead 3-2.

The offense didn't stop there for the Griffs, as four of the first five batters in the fourth registered singles. Vincent and senior Trevor Henneman recorded consecutive singles to open the inning before Kyle Kush used a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. After the sacrifice bunt, DeStefano plated Vincent and Henneman on a two-run single, giving the Griffs a 5-2 lead.

Monmouth chipped away at its deficit in the fifth on a solo home run by Catalano.

Peltier opened his outing by hitting two Monmouth batters. After inducing a fielder's choice, the southpaw struck out the next two batters thwarting Monmouth from scoring.

Peltier increased his strikeout streak to four consecutive batters in the following inning, retiring the Hawks' first two batters on strikes.

Monmouth threatened to tie the game in the ninth after its first two batters reached base on a leadoff walk and a single. A groundout turned out to be productive, advancing both runners into scoring position. Peltier registered his eighth strikeout to record the second out of the inning before hitting a batter with a 3-2 count, loading the bases.

Consigli came out of the bullpen, hoping to keep Monmouth at bay. The freshman was able to get a flyout to end the game, solidifying the victory for Canisius.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"It was a great day. It was fun to be a part of. It was a playoff baseball atmosphere. We went up against one of the best pitchers in our conference. Our guys showed up with energy and fight and they had a plan and executed it. We got a great performance on the mound out of CP [Chris Pouliot], Tommy [Tom Peltier] and Peyton to close the door there.

"I'm impressed with [the offense's] commitment to the plan that we had. They committed to it and didn't deviate from it. They were hungry and did a great job getting their barrels where they needed to.

"I'm always impressed with Pelt [Tom Peltier] and Peyton when they can pitch under pressure. For a pitcher to pitch with that kind of pressure, in a playoff atmosphere, with the tying and go-ahead runs on base, they commit and trust their stuff no matter what the count and they get outs. That's huge for us.

"The message is we continue to prepare, enjoy the next 24 hours and get back on Sunday to get ourselves ready to go [for the MAAC Tournament]. The reason we're all here right now is to win a championship. That's the goal. We're going to prepare ourselves to the best of our ability to do that."

GAME NOTES
• Friday was the 24th all-time meeting between Canisius and Monmouth. Canisius took a 13-11 advantage in the series with the victory.
• Canisius recorded 11 strikeouts on Friday, increasing its total to 448. The 448 punchouts are now both Canisius and MAAC records. The 2015 Canisius squad previously held the program record (444), while the 2017 Marist team had the MAAC record (446).
• The Griffs have scored 338 runs this season, the ninth-most in a single season. It is the most runs plated since scoring 393 times in 2018.
• Following his eight strikeouts Friday, Peltier now has 57 strikeouts on the year. He joins sophomore Matt Duffy and Consigli as the only Canisius pitchers with at least 50 strikeouts. It is the first time three Canisius pitchers have recorded 50-plus strikeouts since 2017 (J.P. Stevenson - 69, Andrew Sipowicz - 65, Zachary Sloan - 58).
• With Consigli earning his sixth save, Canisius now has 11 saves this year. It matches the eighth-most in a season, along with 2010 and 2011. His six saves puts him in sole possesion of the 10th-most in season.
• Vincent, following his three-hit day, has 52 hits this year. He is the fourth Griff with 50-plus hits, joined by Grant (80), DeStefano (70) and Steffan (59). The last time Canisius had four players with at least 50 hits was in 2018, when Liam Wilson (78), Ryan Stekl (64), Conner Morro (63) and Mark McKenna (55) accomplished the feat.
• With his home run, Chiarenza has hit a round-tripper in his last three games. He is the first Griff with a home run in three straight games since Jake Burlingame against Quinnipiac last year. Burlingame hit a home run in both games of a May 9 doubleheader and the first game of a May 10 twinbill.
• Grant recorded his 80th hit Friday, putting him in sole possession of eighth place for the most in a single season. His hit total is the most by a Griff since Jake Lumley had 81 in 2017.
• DeStefano stole his 20th base of the season, becoming the sixth Canisius player to have a 20-steal season. His steals are the most since Anthony Massicci swiped 21 bases in 2016. DeStefano is tied with Jeremy Ross (1998) for the fifth-most steals in a season.
