Pitching Powers Baseball to Series Sweep of Siena

Junior Tom Peltier and sophomore Levi Abbott combined for a four-hit shutout, aiding the Golden Griffins to an 8-0 victory over Siena, sweeping a three-game MAAC baseball series, at Connors Park in Loudonville, N.Y.

Peltier allowed just three of the 21 batters he faced to reach base safely over six shutout innings. The southpaw allowed two hits and walked one while striking out a career-high nine batters.

Abbott earned his first collegiate save after pitching the final three innings for Canisius (21-18, 11-4), allowing two hits and fanning a pair.

Offensively, Canisius recorded a hit in all nine innings as five different players registered multi-hit performances. Graduate students Mike Mazzara and Jake Zurat each logged three-hit games for the Griffs.

Mazzara and senior Dylan Vincent each had two RBI in the contest.

Siena's Billy Rozakis was the losing pitcher after surrendering six hits and three runs (one earned) over four innings.

GAME RECAP
Canisius appeared to have scored its first two runs in the third inning on a two-out, two-run double by sophomore Max Grant. Following a meeting amongst the three-man umpiring crew, the umpires reversed the double to a foul ball.

Rozakis avoided trouble by striking out Grant before getting a pair of groundouts to hold Canisius scoreless.

The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a Siena throwing error on a steal attempt by senior Kyle Kush. Willie Schwarick's throw to get Kush stealing rolled into center field, enabling sophomore Carlin Dick to score from third base.

A two-run single by Vincent, a sacrifice fly by Dick and an RBI single by Mazzara in the fifth extended the Griffs' lead to 5-0.

Graduate student Mike Steffan and Mazzara hit RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to increase Canisius' advantage to 7-0.

Grant added an insurance marker in the ninth on an RBI groundout.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"We did what we needed to do today. We came out and threw strikes from inning one and got our footing underneath us offensively in the middle innings to put runs up.

"Tommy Pelt was locked in from the start. He had his stuff working for him and commanded the game from the first batter onward. Levi, as well, came into the game locked in, commanding the zone to continue his progress to be the guy he is capable of being.

"When we can get different guys to step up offensively in a weekend, like Kenny DodsonJake ZuratMike Mazzara and Carlin Dick, it increases our depth and makes us a tougher lineup. This weekend, collectively, as an offense, it felt like up and down our lineup, someone shined at some point to help us get the three wins."

GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the 138th meeting between the two Empire State rivals. Canisius has now won its last eight over the Saints following the victory.
• The eight-game win streak over Siena is Canisius' second-longest active win streak over a MAAC opponent. Only a 13-game streak over Saint Peter's is longer.
• Canisius recorded its second shutout in 2022 (March 20 at North Carolina A&T) and was the first time shutting out a MAAC opponent since May 12, 2021, in a 21-0 win in seven innings over Saint Peter's.
• Peltier and Abbott combined to fan 11 Siena batters Sunday, increasing the team's season total to 367, which now ranks sixth in program history. The Griffs have at least 11 strikeouts in each of its last four games.
• In the three-game series over the Saints, Canisius' pitching staff logged a 2.67 ERA (8 ER in 27 IP) while posting 36 strikeouts and issuing just seven walks.
• Thanks to the 36 punchouts, Canisius increased its strikeout-per-9-inning ratio to 9.93. This season's figure is a 2.08 increase from last year's total (7.85).
• Peltier's nine strikeouts were the most by a Canisius left-handed pitcher since J.P. Stevenson also had nine against St. Bonaventure on May 4, 2018.
• Peltier has allowed just one earned run in his last 11.1 innings pitched, good for a 0.79 ERA. He has allowed just five hits during that span and walked four while posting 12 strikeouts.
• Abbott extended his shutout streak to 9.1 innings following his three-inning outing Sunday. He now has multiple strikeouts in 14 of his 18 career appearances.
• With the save, Abbott became the fourth Canisius pitcher credited with a save in 2022. It is the first time since 2017 that at least four pitchers recorded a save.
• Zurat recorded his third multi-hit performance of his career Sunday. All of his multi-hit games have been three-hit games.
• Mazzara's three-hit game is his first of the season and his most since a four-hit game against Marist in the MAAC Quarterfinals last season.
