Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Monmouth in High-Scoring Contest

Game Recap
Canisius out-scored Monmouth in the final frame, but was unable to slow down the Hawks, falling by a score of 19-14 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J.

Senior Katie Smolensky tallied four goals and three assists to pace the Golden Griffins (8-4, 3-2 MAAC), while junior Paige Stachura netted four and sophomore Caroline Netti added a hat trick and a helper. Sophomores Riley Davis and Claire Netti and senior Skylar McArthur each scored once in the loss.

Monmouth (8-6, 3-2 MAAC) scored first in the opening quarter before the Griffs answered back with goals from Caroline Netti and Stachura before Canisius starting goalkeeper Shannon Maroney exited the game late in the frame with a lower-body injury.

Davis and Stachura both found the back of the net in the second quarter, but the Hawks out-scored the Griffs, 4-2, to take an 8-5 advantage into halftime.

Monmouth opened the second half with six straight goals to pull away from Canisius. The Griffs would tack on three goals in response to cut the deficit, with McArthur, Stachura and Caroline Netti all registering tallies within a span of three minutes.

Canisius fought back in the final quarter, using four goals from Smolensky and individual markers from Claire Netti and Stachura to outscore the Hawks by a 6-3 margin, but the Griffs could not complete the comeback.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"We faced the worst-case scenario with our only goalie on the team going down in the first quarter. The team did an incredible job fighting for Shannon and doing everything we could to stay in the game until the last whistle.

"Going forward we will come together as a team and give it everything we can to make the MAAC playoffs and compete to keep playing."
