Women’s Lacrosse Downs Quinnipiac in Overtime

Game Recap
Sophomore Caroline Netti tallied the game-winning goal in overtime and freshman Hailey Rooney made 12 saves in her first collegiate game between the pipes to lift Canisius over Quinnipiac, 10-9, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Senior Skylar McArthur scored four goals to highlight the Canisius offense (9-4, 4-2 MAAC) while senior Megan Hoffman and junior Paige Stachura each added a pair of tallies. Senior Katie Smolensky netted one goal and dished out two helpers, including the assist on Caroline Netti's game-winning goal.

Sydney Skalstad scored four goals to lead Quinnipiac (5-9, 1-5 MAAC), while goalkeeper Kat Henselder registered 12 stops for the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac opened the scoring in the first quarter before Hoffman tallied the Griffs' first of the game on a free-position shot to tie the score.

Skalstad responded quickly with her first of the day just under 30 seconds later.

Midway through the quarter, Hoffman found the scoresheet again off a pass from Kaitlyn Salce. The Bobcats and Griffs would trade goals one more time before the end of the frame, with Stachura scoring her 36th of the season to knot the score at three.

In the second frame, Canisius and Quinnipiac once again traded goals in a back-and-forth offensive battle. McArthur and Smolensky tallied, but Skalstad closed out the first half scoring to give the Bobcats a 6-5 lead at the break.

McArthur was the first to find the back of the net in the second half to give the game its sixth tie of the day. Canisius and Quinnipiac both played stellar defense in the third quarter to limit scoring opportunities. With just over a minute remaining in the frame, Skalstad netted her third of the day to give the Bobcats a one-goal lead after three.

The Griffs took their first lead of the day behind goals from Stachura and McArthur early in the fourth quarter. Under a minute later, Skalstad answered back again to tie the score at 8-8.

McArthur would score again midway through the fourth, but the Bobcats were not going down without a fight, answering back to knot the score at 9-9 to end regulation time.

Rooney came up huge in the overtime period, making a big save on a streaking Emily Feeney. With 38 seconds remaining in overtime, Smolensky found Caroline Netti cutting in front of the net to lift the Blue and Gold to victory.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"It was a tough game, we battled from the first whistle until the last. I thought the defense played extremely well with Hailey Rooney anchoring us back there. She was incredible in the cage in her first game ever playing goalie and she did really well. On offense, we capitalized when we needed to and we put it away in overtime.

"We're going to take it day-by-day. I told this team in the locker room that nothing can stop them. We have our eyes on going into playoffs and making noise. So, we'll take it day-by-day. Marist is up next and we will do everything in our power to prepare properly for them, get a great scout on them, get some great scout practices in and we will attack everything in front of us.

"I think in the start of fall we felt it. We were practicing so well in the fall and when we finally got out and got to play other teams, we saw what we were capable of. I think from our first game that we played in the fall there was no doubt in our mind that this year was going to be special. It's a special group of kids and they want to win so badly, and when you have that hunger inside of you and have that desire to work as hard as you can every day in practice, every day in the weight room, they give it their all. We have fun and that's a really special balance and I think the sky's the limit with this group."
