Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits Doubleheader with Rider

Sophomore Megan Giese punched out eight batters in Canisius' 4-3 win before the host Broncs walked off the Golden Griffins, 5-4, in the second game of the twin bill Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Herb and Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Canisius now sits at 13-14 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, while Rider is 18-12 and 4-2 in the MAAC.

Game 1 Recap

Rider grabbed a 1-0 lead in the home half of the third inning when Amanda Cooper connected on a two-out single.

The host Broncs held the advantage until Canisius' bats came to life in the sixth.

With runners on the corners, junior
Tiara Johnson drove in her first career run, doubling home first year Sam Weber.

In the next at bat, junior
Sophia Recrosio gave the Griffs a 3-1 lead with a double of her own.

Rider cut Canisius' lead to one with a two-out single to center by Brianna Koonce, but the Griffs reclaimed the two-run advantage in the seventh when junior
Destiny Falquez plated freshman Saige Alfaro on an infield single.

Giese tossed her eighth complete game of the season in the victory, allowing just the pair of runs on five hits.

Game 2 Recap

Canisius plated three runs in the second frame to take the early lead.

With the bases loaded, sophomore
Sydney Costan was hit by a pitch before Alfaro singled to the left side to put the Griffs up a pair.

Recrosio scored the third run of the frame after a wild pitch from Kathryn Schmierer, who had entered the circle after Canisius chased Rider starter Jessie Niegocki.

Kellie Ervin put the Broncs down just two after hitting a solo home run in the home half of the second, the first of two homers for Ervin in the contest.

Ervin clubbed her second long ball of the day in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Before that, sophomore
Gianna Fazzolari plated Canisius' fourth run of the game in the top of the sixth, sending her eighth hit over the wall this season.

Down a run in the bottom of the seventh, Rider collected three straight singles to load the bases.

Following a strikeout, Cooper singled up the middle to tie the game before a Canisius fielding error allowed the game-winning run to score, giving Rider the walk-off victory.

Game Notes

• Fazzolari's eight home runs in 2022 ties her with Beth Enk (2016), Lindsey Silfer (2016) and Lauren Castro (2019) for the sixth-most long balls in a single season in program history.
• Giese has struckout at least eight batters in her last three starts.
