Game Recap: Softball |

Giese Tosses No-Hitter; Softball Sweeps Monmouth Sunday

Sophomore Megan Giese threw the 29th no-hitter in program history, striking out a career-high 12 batters en route to Canisius' 6-0 win in game one, before the Golden Griffins defeated Monmouth, 11-5, to sweep the Hawks on Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at MU Softball Park in West Long Branch, N.J.

With the sweep, Canisius improves to 15-14 and 5-3 in MAAC play, while Monmouth slips to 6-28 and 1-5 in conference action.

Game 1 Recap

Giese dominated in the opening game of the doubleheader, allowing just three Monmouth batters to reach base.

Despite allowing a pair of walks in the first inning, Giese proceeded to retire 16-straight batters.

The righty recorded three strikeouts in the first, fifth and sixth innings and struck out at least one batter in the first six frames of the contest.

Canisius took the early 2-0 lead in the second following back-to-back infield singles from freshman
Saige Alfaro and graduate student Erin Hufford.

Graduate student
Lindsi Dennis drove in the next two runs, plating sophomore Destiny Falquez with singles in the third and fifth innings.

The Griffs plated their final two runs of the contest in the fifth following a misplayed fly ball by the Monmouth right fielder.

After a fielding error allowed Stavi Augur to reach base in the home half of the seventh, Giese proceeded to induce a pair of fly outs before completing the no-hitter by getting Julia Thuer to ground out to her for the final out.

Game 2 Recap

The Griffs scored five runs in both the first and second innings in the second game of the twin bill to take the early 10-0 lead.

Canisius stayed disciplined, working four consecutive walks to begin game two.

With two outs, Monmouth committed a pair of defensive miscues to give the visitors a 5-0 lead, all while not recording a base hit.

After another run scored on a Monmouth fielding error, Dennis broke the game up, clearing the bases with a three-run triple over the right fielder's head.

The Hawks attempted to climb back into the game in the fourth, recording four straight singles to begin a three-run frame.

Following the hiccup, Canisius reliever
Shealyn Ollison settled down, retiring 12 of the final 15 batters of the game.

Redshirt senior
Emily Nicosia got the start in the second game, tossing three innings.

Nicosia allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three Hawk hitters.
