Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Second-Half Start Sends Quinnipiac Past Men's Lacrosse

Quinnipiac tallied the first seven goals of the second half to pull away from Canisius on its way to a 15-10 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Dylan Donnery tallied a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to pace the Bobcats (2-7, 1-3 MAAC). John DeLucia notched four goals while Jake Tellers (2g, 1a) and Ryan Donnery (1a, 2a) finished with three points apiece. Demitri George was 20-of-29 at the faceoff X and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls. Goalie Nick DiMuccio finished with 12 saves between the pipes.

Redshirt freshman Colin Kelly recorded his sixth hat trick of the season and added two assists for the Golden Griffins (2-9, 1-2 MAAC). Senior Jacob Buck posted his second hat trick of the campaign while sophomore Hunter Parucki dished out a career-best four assists. Graduate goalie Matt Vavonese finished with 13 saves.

Trailing 8-7 at the start of the third quarter, Dylan Donnery tied the game less than three minutes into the frame with his second of the contest, igniting the Bobcats' game-changing spurt that lasted nearly more than 18 minutes and staked the visitors to a 14-8 advantage. DeLucia spearheaded the run, tallying three of his four goals during the stretch, while Donnery chipped in a goal and two assists.

Canisius attempted to stay in the contest as Buck completed his hat trick just before the 11-minute mark of the fourth quarter to halt Quinnipiac's run. That would be as close as Canisius would get, as the teams traded single goals over the remainder of regulation, giving the Bobcats their first league win of the season.

During a back-and-forth first half, Canisius trailed 1-0 before sophomore Keegan Kozack and Buck combined for goals a little more than 90 seconds apart to put Canisius in front, 2-1.

The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the opening half until Kelly struck with a shot from distance in the final seconds of the second quarter, giving the Griffs an 8-7 advantage at the break and setting the stage for the Bobcats' strong second half.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"It was a tale of two halves today. We went into halftime with a one-goal lead feeling good. Obviously, we had some things that we could have done better in the first half. However, we felt the adjustments that we made at the break were good. Then, we came out in the second half and unfortunately lost our composure in the clearing game and we're unable to get the ball in the offensive end and had to play a lot of defense and everything kind of snowballed from there. We had chances to pick up ground balls on faceoffs during some great battles between both faceoff players and unfortunately, we just didn't come up them when we needed it. So, we've got to look at ourselves and figure out how we can stop beating ourselves across the board.

"We found different ways to be successful in the first half. We had some transition goals, goals off of faceoffs, during 6-on-6 play. Defensively, we're playing real solid overall, making great stops and just playing a great team game. We knew it was going to be a back-and-forth affair. Unfortunately, we never had an opportunity to build any cushion. It was trading goals back-and-forth throughout. It would have been great to try and go on a little bit of a mini run. But, we felt good heading into the locker room at halftime.

"We just lost our composure in the second half. That's the easiest way to put it. The big key here is being able to clear the ball the first time and when you don't do that and you got to go back and play another 60-plus seconds of defense, it wears down the body and unfortunately, we just gave up too many opportunities. So, we'll look at the film and figure out how we have to be better in terms of taking care of that ball and valuing each and every possession because we felt that if we got the ball, we were going to score goals today.
