Softball Splits Midweek Doubleheader at St. Bonaventure

Freshman Toria Kover earned the win in her collegiate debut en route to Canisius' 6-2 win over St. Bonaventure in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Joyce Field in Olean.

The host Bonnies took the night cap, defeating the Golden Griffins, 6-5, in six innings. The contest was called due to darkness.

With the split, the Griffs moved to 12-13 on the campaign while St. Bonaventure now stands at 6-21 overall.

Game 1 Recap

Canisius jumped out to a 1-0 lead just four batters in, when sophomore Gianna Fazzolari grounded out to plate graduate student Erin Hufford.

Hufford added to the lead in the second, driving in a pair on a two-out single to left.
The graduate student proceeded to steal second, picking up her 65th career stolen base, which passed Lizzy Gatto for third all-time in program history.

Canisius plated three insurance runs in the fifth when graduate student
Lindsi Dennis belted a two-run triple before freshman Rosie Gomez singled her home.

After surrendering a two-run homer in the home half of the second, the Canisius pitching staff allowed just five batters to reach base in the remaining 5.2 innings.

Senior
Alexis Churchill got the start in the circle, striking out a pair in three innings of work.

Kover and sophomore
Megan Giese followed Churchill out of the bullpen. Both pitchers tossed a pair of shutout innings each in the victory.

Game 2 Recap

Following a pair of scoreless frames, Fazzolari gave the Griffs a 3-0 advantage after clearing the bases with a double.

The Bonnies responded in the home half, scoring four runs to take the lead as it sent nine batters to the plate during the frame.

St. Bonaventure tied the contest at two after a Victoria Jacques single and Grace Perechinsky sacrifice fly.
Elyse Graham gave the Bonnies the lead after the catcher connected on 2-0 pitch, singling in Jacques and Madison Stewart.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings, before the game was called due to darkness.

In the fifth, Fazzolari crossed the plate on a wild pitch, while Graham drove in her third run of the day on a one-out single.

The sixth inning saw junior
Sophia Recrosio tie the game at 5-all, slapping a 2-1 pitch to left to plate freshman Sam Weber.

St. Bonaventure scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error.
