Fairfield Defeats Women’s Lacrosse in Regular Season Finale

Game Recap
Fairfield had ten different players find the back of the net to defeat Canisius in its regular-season finale and claim a 21-11 victory over the Golden Griffins in MAAC women's lacrosse action Saturday at Rafferty Stadium in Fairfield, Conn.

The Stags (10-6, 5-3 MAAC) were led by Maggie Fort and Amanda Kozak, who posted four goals each, while Rylee Harrell posted a hat trick.

Senior Skylar McArthur paced Canisius (10-5, 5-3 MAAC) with a five-goal performance while sophomore Caroline Netti registered four tallies of her own. Senior Megan Hoffman netted two goals in the defeat and four different Griffs dished out an assist.

Fairfield opened the scoring just 44 seconds in to give the Stags an early lead. McArthur tallied her first of the day at the 9:22 mark to tie the score at one-all.

A couple minutes later, sophomore Riley Davis found Caroline Netti in front of the net to give the Griffs their first and only lead of the day. The Stags tacked on four more goals to hold a 5-2 advantage at the end of the first frame.

Hoffman recorded a man-up goal tally in the second quarter, assisted by Katie Smolensky to cut into the Fairfield lead before the Stags notched eight unanswered goals to expand their cushion to 13-3 at halftime.

The Griffs out-scored the Stags in the third behind two goals each from Caroline Netti and McArthur and a tally from Hoffman, but Fairfield kept the pressure on offensively, leading by eight after three quarters.

In the final frame, McArthur netted her fourth and fifth goals of the day, while Caroline Netti registered her fourth tally. Fairfield struck five times in the fourth to secure the ten-goal victory.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"We weren't disciplined and focused at the start of the game and that caused us to go down big in the first half. We really picked things up in the second half, but it was too late against a strong Fairfield team.

"We're going to give our bodies some time to rest after having two long trips in the same week and then refocus on what the plan is for playoffs. At this point, we don't know who we'll face, but we will work hard and prepare for whatever the next challenge is."

• Junior Paige Stachura saw her 14-game goal streak come to an end in the contest, but kept her point streak alive with an assist on a Caroline Netti tally.
