Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Fairfield in MAAC Opening Round

Game Recap
Fairfield out-scored Canisius by a 7-3 margin in the first quarter to pull away and defeat the Golden Griffins, 15-8, in the Opening Round of the 2022 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Saturday at Rafferty Stadium in Fairfield, Conn.

Maggie Fort led the way for the fourth-seeded Stags (10-6) with four goals and an assist, while five other players recorded multi-point performances in the victory.

Senior midfielder Skylar McArthur had four tallies and junior Paige Stachura posted a hat trick for the fifth-seeded Golden Griffins (11-6). Junior Kaitlyn Salce netted a goal of her own, while freshman goalkeeper Hailey Rooney registered 11 saves in goal for Canisius.

The Stags opened the contest with three early goals before McArthur picked up where she left off last game, tallying her first two goals of the contest.

Despite holding a 7-4 advantage in draw controls, Canisius trailed by four at the end of the opening frame.

McArthur netted her third goal of the day and Salce ripped a shot past Fairfield goalkeeper Casey Collins just minutes into the second quarter to give the Griffs some momentum and bring Canisius within three.

Late in the first half, the Stags found the back of the net to take a 9-5 lead into the locker room.

Stachura notched her second goal less than two minutes into the third, keeping Canisius within arms length. From there, Fairfield would go on to score three unanswered goals to sit on top, 12-6, heading into the final frame.

Stachura completed her hat trick off a pass from senior Katie Smolensky to open the fourth quarter, but the Stags used a three-goal spurt and multiple caused turnovers to keep Canisius at bay.

With 1:01 left in regulation, McArthur tallied her 50th goal of the season to end her career-year.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"We worked extremely hard, but it did not go our way today. We played a very talented Fairfield team and when you turn the ball over against a team like that, they convert.

"I could not have asked for a greater group of people to coach in my first year at Canisius. This team surpassed anyone's expectations of them, but most importantly, we worked hard and had a lot of fun together."
