Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept by Ohio in Saturday Doubleheader

The Canisius baseball team fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Ohio on Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio.

The Bobcats (18-17) took the opener by an 8-7 margin before completing the sweep of the Golden Griffins (17-18) with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Colin Kasperbauer and Spencer Harbert combined to record all seven of Ohio's RBI as the Bobcats won the opening game of Saturday's twin bill, 8-7.

Kasperbauer went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI. Harbert went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run. Isaiah Peterson also had a 3-for-4 game at the plate for Ohio, as the trio combined for six of the team's eight runs.

Graduate student Mike Steffan went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Max Grant was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Braxton Kelly earned the victory for Ohio, allowing just two hits and one run in four innings of relief while walking two and striking out five.

Sophomore Matt Duffy allowed eight hits and five runs (four earned) over his six innings. He walked just one batter and struck out six.

Freshman Peyton Consigli was saddled with the loss after allowing two hits and three runs (two earned) in two innings of work out of the bullpen while fanning four.

Kasperbauer opened the scoring in the first when he singled home Peterson, who led off the home half of the opening frame with a double to the right-center field gap.

Ohio's starting pitcher, Jacob Tate, retired the first six Canisius batters before the Griffs plated four two-out runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

Junior Kenny Dodson, who led the inning off with an infield single, scored on a throwing error by Ohio's first baseman during a steal attempt to tie the game. Fellow junior Brennan Chisholm ignited a two-out rally for Canisius, recording the first of three consecutive base hits. Grant and Steffan followed Chisholm with an RBI single and two-run double.

Kasperbauer led off the fourth inning with a double before being followed by a walk drawn by Mason Minzey. Harbert then hit his three-run home run to tie the game, 4-4.

Canisius responded with three unanswered runs, two of which came in the fifth, to retake the lead.

Five of the first six batters reached base safely in the fifth, with the first three recording base knocks. Grant hit an RBI double, plating junior Mike DeStefano to take a 5-4 lead. After an Ohio pitching change, Steffan recorded his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly. Senior Dylan Vincent singled home a run in the seventh, putting the Griffs ahead, 7-5.

Ohio retook the lead, 8-7, in the home half of the seventh on the Bobcats' second three-run home run of the day behind Kasperbauer's round-tripper down the left field line.

Kelly and Ohio's ace pitcher, Edward Kutt IV, shut down Canisius after taking the lead, setting down the last six batters in order. Kutt IV earned his first save of the year.

GAME TWO RECAP
Ohio utilized a six-run first inning to jump out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bobcats earned the doubleheader sweep, 9-5.

AJ Rausch went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the nightcap for Ohio. Michael Richardson also had a three-hit day for the Bobcats.

Steffan had the only two-hit game for Canisius in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a home run.

Hudson Boncal earned the victory for the Bobcats, allowing three hits and four runs (two earned) in a five-inning outing. He walked one and struck out six.

Canisius starter Justin Guiliano could not escape the first inning, allowing six runs on three hits while recording just one out. He also issued two walks.

Six of the seven batters Guiliano faced wound up reaching base safely and eventually scoring.

Rausch hit a two-run home run to give Ohio the lead. After consecutive walks issued by Guiliano, Harbert singled home a run, putting Ohio ahead, 3-0. A sacrifice fly by Alex Finney brought in another Ohio run before Richardson hit an RBI single to make it a 5-0 contest. Senior Brett Kochanski replaced Guiliano and allowed an RBI double to the first batter he faced.

After the double, Kochanski settled in as he retired eight of the next 10 batters he faced.

Canisius cut the deficit to 6-2 in the second as senior Dylan Vincent scored on a passed ball on a dropped third strike. Sophomore Carlin Dick crossed home plate later in the frame on a fielder's choice.

Two more Canisius runs scored in the third on an infield single by Dick. The latter run crossed home plate due to a throwing error by Boncal, attempting to get Dick out at first after knocking the ball down with his glove.

Ohio added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it an 8-4 contest.

Steffan hit a two-out solo home run in the seventh trimming Ohio's advantage to 8-5. The home run for Steffan was his seventh of the year, matching Grant for the team lead.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh extended Ohio's lead to 9-5, closing out the scoring.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"We competed a little in the first game, but made too many little mistakes, which ended up costing us. We need to communicate on defense and handle the baseball to not allow extra runners on base.

"Offensively, we failed to compete for 18 innings. We had a few good ones but nothing to win the day."

"We need to put this bye week behind us and move forward to be the team we are capable of being."
