Fourth-Quarter Comeback Fuels Women’s Lacrosse Overtime Victory

Game Recap
Senior Skylar McArthur scored five times, including the game-tying and game-winning goals, to help Canisius complete an 11-10 come-from-behind overtime victory versus Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play with the dramatic victory while Marist slipped to 2-13 and 0-7.

A defensive battle in the first quarter kept both teams off of the scoresheet until the 8:34 mark, when junior Paige Stachura fired a shot from the top of the arc to tally her 38th of the season and put the Griffs on the board first. A few minutes later, McArthur split the defense to net her first goal of the day and give Canisius a two-goal lead.

The Red Foxes responded with two goals of their own to knot the score at two early in the second frame. The Griffs answered back immediately with sophomore Caroline Netti scoring her 31st of the campaign off a pass from senior Katie Smolensky.

Marist answered once again with Trotta tallying her second goal of the contest, before Smolensky found McArthur in front of the net to give the Griffs another one-goal lead.

With 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter, the Red Foxes scored to tie the game at four at the half.

Marist came out of the locker room with a three-goal burst to take its first lead of the day. The Griffs fought back with tallies from Stachura and McArthur to cut the lead to one, but Marist scored again late in the third to take an 8-6 advantage into the final frame.

Stachura opened the scoring in the fourth before Trotta netted a pair of goals to give Marist a 10-7 lead with 5:39 remaining in regulation.

The Griffs went on a three-goal scoring run, sparked by sophomore Riley Davis, who tallied consecutive goals within a minute to give Canisius life before McArthur tied the game with 1:19 on the clock to complete the comeback and force overtime.

In overtime, Stachura won the draw control and McArthur wasted no time, scoring her fifth of the day and 41st of the season to push the Griffs past Marist.

Goalkeeper Hailey Rooney registered 10 stops in net, while the Canisius defense forced multiple turnovers in the victory.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"It was a gritty game that came down to executing at the end. In the fourth quarter, we did a much better job of running our systems and it resulted in goals when we needed them most.

"We had to dig deep in that second half and find a way to win. Avery Penoyer came into the game and brought hustle and heart that we were really in need of. She sparked the comeback for us by doing all of the little things that we needed. I'm so proud of her!

"Skylar (McArthur) put the team on her back at times today. Avery was making all of the gritty plays to get us possession and Skylar was finishing plays on the offensive end. Skylar's strength and speed are unmatched in our conference and she really put that on display today.

"We knew this was a good opportunity for our defense to make plays and cause turnovers all over the field, so we wanted them capitalizing on double-team opportunities. They did well executing the scout.

"We definitely need to clean up the turnovers and keep our composure against Fairfield. We can't turn the ball over like we did today against Marist. We'll go back to the fundamentals and make sure we're ready to close out the regular season as best we can."
