Stachura and McArthur Lead Women’s Lacrosse to Victory Versus Iona

Game Recap
Junior Paige Stachura and senior Skylar McArthur recorded six points each to lead Canisius (7-3, 2-1 MAAC) to a 17-15 victory over Iona (7-4, 0-3 MAAC) on Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Stachura tallied a career-high six goals in the win, while McArthur netted five goals for the third time this season while adding a helper. Riley Davis also had a standout performance, registering a career-best five points on three goals and two assists. Megan Hoffman and Caroline Netti each added a tally and two assists. Katie Smolensky extended her point streak to 10 games with her 19th goal of the season.

In the opening frame, the Golden Griffins got on the board with Davis' first of the game, assisted by Skylar McArthur. A few minutes later, McArthur put the Griffs up, 2-0, on a free-position goal. From there, it would be all Iona as the Gaels recorded four straight tallies to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.

Hoffman ended the Griffs' 14-minute scoring drought with an unassisted goal at 10:36 of the second frame. Canisius found itself on the scoresheet again a little over a minute later, as Stachura tallied her first of the day on a free-position shot.

Iona scored two straight goals before the Griffs went on a three-goal run of their own. In a span of two minutes, McArthur converted on a free-position shot and Stachura and McArthur netted unassisted goals to tie the game at seven.

The Gaels and Griffs traded goals to close out the half, with McArthur recording her third tally of the quarter and Caroline Netti scoring with just three seconds remaining in the frame to send Canisius to the locker room tied with Iona, 9-9.

The Gaels opened up the scoring in the second half, but the Griffs went on a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead.

Davis sparked the scoring run early in the third with a tally off of a nifty pass from Hoffman. McArthur would score her fifth of the day midway through the third quarter before Canisius tallied three goals in the final 1:45 of the frame.

Smolensky and Stachura kept things going early in the fourth, with two more goals to give the Griffs a 16-10 advantage with 7:57 remaining in the contest. The Gaels outscored Canisius, 5-1, in the final minutes, but it would not be enough as the Griffs held on to secure the win.

McArthur recorded a team-high six draw controls in the victory, while goalkeeper Shannon Maroney registered 11 saves, highlighted by a pair of big saves in the fourth quarter.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"I give a lot of credit to Iona. They are a gritty team that fought hard until the last whistle, but I'm proud of our team for being able to gut this win out.

"Meg (Megan Hoffman) plays with so much passion. Our team feeds off of her energy and it was just great to have her back today.

"Paige (Stachura) and Sky (Skylar McArthur) are best friends off the field and work so well together on it. They hold each other accountable, challenge each other and support each other the way teammates should. It is so much fun working with the both of them.

"We were doing a great job driving hard and drawing the slide. We had our heads up and hit the open man once the slide came. That's something we work hard on and it was nice to see it click today.

"We're going to focus on taking care of small injuries and then really hone in on the scout for Siena on Wednesday."
