Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweeps Quinnipiac to Begin Conference Play

Sophomore Megan Giese tied her career high with ten strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader and sophomore Christie McGee-Ross stole four bases in the nightcap as Canisius swept Quinnipiac, 10-0 and 5-1, to begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the sweep, Canisius moves to 11-10 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Quinnipiac falls to 5-16 and 0-2 in MAAC play.

Game 1 Recap

After just three batters reached base across the first three innings, Canisius' offense came to life in the home half of the fourth.

Graduate student
Lindsi Dennis plated the first run of the game following a fielding error by Quinnipiac's right fielder.

Canisius extended its lead after graduate student
Erin Hufford drew a bases loaded walk before freshman Saige Alfaro drove in a pair on a two-out double.

An infield single by freshman Rosie Gomez in the bottom of the fifth increased the Griffs' lead to five before they doubled their run total with five runs in the home half of the sixth to earn the mercy-rule win.

With a pair of runners in scoring position, Alfaro drove in her third run of the day in a single up the middle.

Two batters later, sophomore Gianna Fazzolari stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and connected on a 1-1 offering from Bobcats pitcher Zali Adams, blasting it over the center field wall for a walk-off grand slam.

In the circle, Giese opened conference play with a dominant performance as th
e right-hander allowed just one hit and two free passes while fanning ten Quinnipiac batters.

Game 2 Recap

Canisius once again opened the scoring, plating three runs in the home half of the third.

McGee-Ross drove in a pair with a one-out double before scoring later in the frame on a Fazzolari sacrifice fly.

After yielding Quinnipiac's lone run of the day in the fourth, the Griffs answered right back when Hufford plated junior
Tiara Johnson on an infield single to restore Canisius' three-run cushion, 4-1.

Fazzolari added an insurance marker in the fifth, singling in McGee-Ross, who had swiped her third and fourth bases of the game following an infield single.

The Griffs' pitching staff once again kept the Bobcats' offense at bay during the nightcap.

Redshirt senior
Emily Nicosia moved to 4-0 for the first time in her career after tossing five strong innings in the circle.
She allowed just five batters to reach base before handing the ball off the senior Alexis Churchill for the final two frames of the contest.

Game Notes

• Giese tied her career high in strikeouts. She now has three games with ten strikeouts and has done it twice in the 2022 season.
• Canisius stole nine bases in the second game of the twin bill and 15 total bags on the day. Including today's doubleheader, the Griffs have stolen six or more bases in five games this season.
• The nine stolen bases were also the most in a single game since the Blue and Gold swiped nine bags against Buffalo on March 30, 2016.
• McGee-Ross established a career high with four stolen bases in the second game. She also became the first Griff to swipe four bags in a contest since Kara Paradowski accomplished the feat on May 2, 2021 against Rider.
• Fazzolari hit her seventh home run of the season, tying her with Jenny Maheu, Katie Miranto, Stephanie Pfentner and Moriah Harris for ninth most all-time in a single season.
• Canisius has now hit a grand slam for the second consecutive season. Hannah Catallo-Stooks blasted a pinch-hit grand slam on April 28, 2021 against Niagara.

Up Next

• Canisius closes out the weekend homestand with a pair of contests against Marist on Sunday. First pitch of the opening game is slated for noon from the Demske Sports Complex.
