Pitching Propels Softball to Sweep Over Siena Saturday Morning

Canisius improved to 7-3 in conference play after defeating Siena, 3-1 and 2-0, Saturday morning in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Siena Softball Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Sophomore
Megan Giese fanned 10 Siena batters in game one before earning her fourth save of the season in the second game of the twin bill.

Senior
Alexis Churchill struck out a season-high seven batters in game two, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Giese.

With the sweep, Canisius improves to 18-15 on the season while Siena sits at 18-16 and 7-3 in MAAC play.

Game 1 Recap

Backed by Giese's strong performance in the circle, the Griffs took a 2-0 advantage in the third inning.

With the bases loaded, sophomore
Destiny Falquez served a 3-2 pitch from Siena starter Adriana Romano to left field, plating graduate student Erin Hufford and sophomore Sydney Costan.

Following a one-out walk, the Saints looked to respond in the home half of the inning. Siena had back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Giese worked through the trouble, striking out Antonia Alba before getting Ava Fitzmaurice to ground out.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, with sophomore
Christie McGee-Ross driving in Hufford on an RBI double before Siena got on the board following a Canisius fielding error.

Giese finished off the victory by allowing just three base runners to reach base across the final 4.2 innings of play.

Game 2 Recap

Churchill continued Canisius' strong day in the circle, getting the game two start. The southpaw yielded just four base runners, while striking out a season-high seven batters.

Siena looked to take an early 1-0 lead in the first after Isabella Pardo led off the inning with a triple.
Churchill proceeded to strike out the next two batters before getting Kyleigh Potter to line out to end the threat.

The Griffs scored the lone runs of the game in the top of the fourth.

With freshman
Sam Weber on second, graduate student Lindsi Dennis singled up the middle, putting Canisius up a run. The Griffs doubled their lead following an RBI groundout from junior Sophia Recrosio.

Giese entered the circle for the second time on the day, picking up right where she left off.

The right-hander induced a fly out before fanning three straight batters. Giese closed out the contest by getting backstop Jocelyn Ulrich to ground out to end the ballgame.
