Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweeps St. Bonaventure

The Canisius pitching staff once again dominated in the circle, allowing just three runs while striking out a combined 14 batters in the Golden Griffins' 4-2 and 8-1 victories over longtime rival St. Bonaventure Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the sweep, the Griffs have reached the 20-win mark for the second consecutive season, moving to 20-15 on the year. The Bonnies fell to 7-32.

Game 1 Recap

Graduate student Shealyn Ollison picked up where she left off last week against Syracuse, tossing five strong innings in the circle for Canisius.

After the Griffs' took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Bonnies answered in the top of the third scoring on a Canisius throwing error.

Madison Stewart gave St. Bonaventure the lead with a solo home run over the center field wall, putting the visitors up 2-1 in the fourth.

Following a passed ball in the home half of the fourth to tie the contest, 2-2, the Griffs plated a pair of runs in the fifth frame.

Sophomore
Christie McGee-Ross singled up the middle to score graduate student Erin Hufford before coming around to score on sophomore Gianna Fazzolari's sacrifice bunt.

That was all the run support sophomore
Megan Giese needed, as she entered the circle in relief of Ollison.

After giving up a leadoff single, Giese proceeded to strikeout the next three batters in the sixth and added a pair of strikeouts in the seventh to earn her fifth save of the campaign.

Game 2 Recap

Redshirt senior Emily Nicosia got the ball in the second game of the twin bill and silenced the Bonnies' bats.

Tossing her 22nd career complete game, Nicosia allowed just three hits and walked one to go with six strikeouts. St. Bonaventure's lone run of the contest scored on a passed ball in the fifth.

The Blue and Gold grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after junior
Tiara Johnson blasted a two-run shot over the center field wall for her first collegiate home run.

Canisius doubled its lead in the second following a defensive miscue by St. Bonaventure that allowed freshmen
Emily Ilano and Sam Weber to score.

While leading 5-1, the Griffs tacked on three more runs in the home half of the fifth.

Freshman
Rosie Gomez ripped a two-out single up the middle to plate freshman Saige Alfaro before pinch hitter Sophia Recrosio hit an RBI double to left field scoring pinch-runner Abbey Roeser. Ilano then singled home Recrosio with her third hit of the game, a season-high for the first-year infielder.

Nicosia finished off the game by retiring seven of the last eight batters en route to her fifth win of the season.

Game Notes

• Giese is tied with Erin Crowley (1997) for the fifth-most saves in a season in program history with five.
• Giese has struck out at least five batters in six of her last eight appearances in the circle.
• With the relief outing, Giese eclipsed the 100-inning mark in 2022. She is the first Canisius pitcher to throw over 100 innings since Erika Mackie in 2018 (154.2).
• With her walk drawn in the first game, sophomore Destiny Falquez is tied with Tricia Andres (1992), Katie Miranto (2007) and Meghan Cuda (2013) for the ninth-most walks in a season with 23.
